Movies w people stranded in the snow...

Hi - What are other movies like The Thing in which people are stranded in a snowy location? I'm not really into the ones where a plane crash strands someone or a group of people (like "Arctic" or "Alive") but more like ones with a blizzard or a snowy outpost that is cut off from civilization. Like...The Hateful 8...or any version of The Thing...or The Shining. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Does Whiteout count?

Not sure, never seen it!...I think I'll check it out though...little nervous about the 5.5 rating but it seems to be what I'm looking for. Thanks!

reply

5.5? It's much better than that.

I enjoyed "Whiteout," though not as much as "The Thing."

Herzog's "Encounters at the End of the World" is also worth a look-see if you haven't yet. It's a documentary about the people living and working in Antarctica, but to me is as least as compelling as any of the other films named in this thread

Yep, seen that one, that was a good doc.

At the time I saw the movie I remember the trailers almost implying it was a thing type monster movie. There was a voice over to the efect of "Theres something in the ice or We found something in the ice" right before a the trailer shows the splitting ice sequence. :/
turned out it was just about theives.

I remember this too. The guy says "we were out looking for a fallen meteor...and then we found something big" And then something massive bursts out of the ice! The marketing team knew exactly what they were doing. There was speculation that it was going to be related to The Thing, at least among school cafeterias like mine. Then it came out and all this buildup was about some Soviet conspiracy or whatever. Oh well. Footage from the movie would later go onto to be used in fanmade "The Thing 2" trailers, which was always nice.

Snowpiercer (2013) - although it mostly takes place on a train, they are all stuck on the train due to the snow/intense cold and they do look out at the snow through the windows many times, so you still get that snowy feel. I have a thing (no pun intended) for movies set in the snow.

reply

Yep, seen that one, it is good. I like the way you're thinking! Thanks...

'Runaway Train' 1985 w/ Jon Voight

A good and intense movie of a two escape convicts stuck on a runaway train in the frozen Alasken north.

If they ever finally make "At the Mountains of Madness" into a movie, that would qualify.
