Would you still call it a "thing" after you discovered the spaceship?

Rewatched the movie yesterday. After they discover the spaceship they never use the word alien. They say that it came from outer space and they refer to it as an intruder organsism, imitation or thing but never call it an alien. Not once. I'd say you use the word thing for the unknown and objects. After the spaceship discovery it's no longer an unknown thing/creature. It's an alien lifeform. Half of the people there are scientists. Two of them are biologists and they keep calling it a thing.

Would you still call it a "thing" after you discovered the spaceship? Or would you refer to it as an alien (lifeform)?

Maybe come up with a new name for the species? They have scientists in their group.

reply

Maybe they did. Blair and Fuchs made a lot of notes.

Cuz The Thing sounds cooler than alien lifeform.

reply

Or...Alien ;) Oh snap!

reply

Do agree that it's sounds pretty cool and different

It's probably like how no one in The Walking Dead has ever heard the word "zombie". I've always found it silly, personally. I don't understand the need to separate your work from the rest of the history of pop culture. It's always seemed like a desperate attempt to be unique and original, to me.

reply

Yeah, you might be right there. Could be for artistic or commercial reasons. They do use the tagline "The ultimate in alien terror" on one of the movie posters. So they're not completely ignoring it.

reply

I'd call it Pipsy and give it little treats.

reply

Be careful. It's not a dog...it's an imitation...

reply

judging it based on human morality. It has ruthlessly killed several of your friends so you don't want to humanize it. Therefore you just call it a thing.

I think Carpenter explained why they never called the thing an "alien", even though it clearly is one. What he said was these are all blue-collar working-class men who would have a hard time accepting silly science-fictiony elements like aliens to exist. These are guys who aren't easily amused by fairy tales and scary stories, and thus wouldn't immediately admit their belief in aliens. Instead, it's just "some thing" to them.

Despite the fact they saw a giant UFO in the ground...
