yeah, Tenebre, along with Opera, seem to be almost a satire of Argento's life and work. There are many parallels between the plots and his life in those two films.

It was an interesting scene, separating the artist from his art.
But is this a legitimate defense? or a clever cop-out?
I think if I made violent or misogynistic films and people gave me grief about them I'd be like "yeah I love violence and misogyny, what the f@#$ are you going to do about it?!"
As long as theres a steady market for your material you should have no problem being straight up about your own vices and perversions.
But is Argento sexist? Certainly not as sexist as Fulci or Bava is.
A running sub-plot in Deep Red was women's strength (Gianna seems to be Marc's equal in the arm-wrestling match, she pulls him from the fire, the elderly Martha is able to overpower her victims, etc.)
I'd say the only film he seemed somewhat sexist in was Tenebre, and that could be to add another layer of irony to the story.

Besides the implied "sexist" theme in the author's book "Tenebre" I didn't think the actual film itself was sexist, although I've only seen it a handful of times. Men are killed to are they not?
yes, towards the end men are killed, but these are more out of neccessity. At the beginning, all the victims were all "sinning" women in some various state of undress, such as the shoplifter or the lesbian couple.

Hmmmm this is true. Still, I don't really have a problem with it. Scores of women lose their scalps in Maniac but Tom Savini gets his head blown off :)
On an unrelated note, this is my first Dario Argento film and I thought it kicked major ass. Which of his should I track down next? I have Suspiria and Deep Red on the list.
good, I'm glad you liked it! I hope you enjoy Suspiria and Deep Red, Suspiria is my favorite film of all time, and Deep Red get's better with each viewing.
I would really recommend seeing all his films, but if you liked Tenebre, you should definately see Bird with the Crystal Plumage (similar story with a writer stalked by a killer) Opera has some very violent, energetic murder scenes like Tenebre, and Non Ho Sonno is also a very good neo-giallo.

Yeah I'm definitely an Argento convert. He is an excellent film-maker. I found Tenebre so good infact as soon as it was finished, I played it from the start again with the commentary.
I've heard of the Bird with the Crystal Plumage, will add that to the list along with the other two you mentioned there. Thanks for the recommendations dude.
lol you sound just like me! Tenebre was my first Argento film too, and it totally blew me away. In fact, I'd say it's what made me want to be a film director.
BTW, you might want to check out Lamberto Bava's film "A Blade in the Dark" It's kind off a Tenebre rip-off, though not as good, it still has alot of style.
enjoy!
