anyone else?

okay i know it's widely thought that either Profondo Rosso or Suspiria is Argento's best but even though i love Profondo Rosso (haven't seen Suspiria yet..will soon though!) Tenebre is my all time fav movie. Am i a freak or does anyone else feel this way? I just think the music was the best, the story excellent, great effects and gore, most stylish murders, and if i can be a pig for a minute some of the sexiest girls ever.

what's your opinion?

great, thanks for the advice. I just watched Suspiria a little bit ago. Great flick and very creepy, but i still think Tenebre is better.

I'm gonna watch Inferno tomorrow and if it's even half as good as Suspiria i think I'll love it.

wow, we have VERY different opinions lol. You can't pay too much attention to my list. It's very hard for me to rate Argento's movies because they are all perfect in their own way and I'd give em all a 10 outa 10.

I'd heard alot about how Argento's style was heavily muted in Trauma, but it didn't feel like that to me, especially compared to Cat O Nine Tails and The Card Player. I loved Trauma, it felt like a classic giallo to me. There was great acting all around, especially from Asia and Piper Laurie. A great mystery that actually made sense and alot of Deep Red references helped too. My only problem with the flick would be that annoying neighbor kid.

Phenomena was great, especially now that I've seen the Anchor Bay version instead of the horrid Creepers version. My only complaint with the flick was that the "girl who talks to instects" stoty didn't go well with the "killer on the loose" story. We spend most of the movie learning about connelly's power over insects, which takes alot of time away from the great murder scenes. (relatively low bodycount in this flick) then at the end, the insects are kinda inconsequential. I mean, if you think about it, the insects really didn't help Jennifer find the killer. The killer found her. And, i know the insects saved Jennifer from the killer at the end, he would have got her anyway if he hadn't got caught in the fire. But still, it's a great film.

Opera is kind of a mixed bag in my eyes. What Argento get's right, he get really right (the bullet through the door scene) and what he gets wrong, he get's very wrong(the ending). The murder scenes were excellent, brutal and stylish, but I still don't understand the killer's motive and what the flashbacks have to do with anything. And some aspects are just silly. I mean, if i was tied up and forced to watch a murder TWICE I'd be damn sure not to let it happen again! But it is the last "classic" Argento flick, and the needles under the eyes idea is very cool.

okay, i kinda endlessly ranted, but there you go.

I've seen profundo rosso, tenebrae, cat o nine tails, Phenomena (both versions), suspiria, Inferno (both versions), sleepless, card player, The sect, Trauma, the church, bird with the crystal plummage, stendahl syndrome, terror at the opera and opera. In fact i dont see anyone else here or know of anyone else whose seen more than me.

anyway sorry, back on track..out of all those i'd have to say the best are deep red and tenebrae, with probably suspiria and phenomena close behind. I would also like to point out that Cat o nine tails, is verymuch a little mentioned film but is also verygood so lets not forget that one, and it has the great Karl Malden in it.

His worst works i've seen her the church (i saw that when i was 17 and was terribly bored by it), stendahl syndrome (thomas kretchmann of king kong fame wasted in his role) and the ridiculous card player.

not bashing you or anything but terror at the opera and opera are the same thing and and the sect and the church werent argento movies, they were michelle soavi movies. that argento produced. i own all his movies but four flies on grey velvet.so ive seen just as many.no offense bud. my favorites are suspiria, opera, and deep red.

I find Deep Red to be Argento's best work, for 2 reasons: 1) It's a coherent story line where the ending is a logical conclusion to all that came before it in the movie, and 2) I cared about the protagonist, because David Hemmings did a great job. One of my major issues with Argento is that, although he creates great death scenes, his plotting is bizarre and a lot of the times illogical. But Deep Red is a taut thriller, where the plot holds up (just look at Opera to see how a killer pops out of the blue). I wonder how much of this should be credited to Zapponi's co-writing.

Also, I really rooted for the hero. I've seen so many horror films that I rarely get scared or surprised at what's coming, but with Deep Red, I was literally telling my screen, "Don't go in there!" or "Get out of there!"

Deep Red is Argento's best example of what a giallo should be.

i agree with you completely Owen. I hope in my original post i didn't sound like i was dissing deep red. I love that film too. I just find Tenebre better.

What about the story and the murders made you prefer it to Deep Red?

reply

While Tenebre's story does border on contrived at times, i think it was a bit tighter than Deep Red's, which ran the slight chance of becoming boring at times. The murders in tenebre, to me, are more stylish, and are infused with such energy. My favs being the girl falling through the glass and the arm chopping scene.

one area where the two films are pretty even are the music. Goblin outdid themselves in both films, while the two scores are different, they fit their respective movies perfectly.

do you agree?

reply

Yes, I like the scores of both movies. I can see where you might find Deep Red to teeter on boring at times, but I find this is the case with just about all of Argento's movies. As for the kills, I think they're great in both movies. I love the way the final kill with the old fashioned elevator was done in Deep Red; in fact, I thought of it the other day when I was on an elevator like that in NYC.

suspiria is my all time favorite argento film, but tenebre is next. as good as deep red is, i think tenebre is better.

Although I did think Tenebre was one of Argento's finer offerings, I am more fond of Phenomena and Suspiria. Tenebre did have the best overall "style" out of any Argento movies.
