Im sure this was addressed a whole bunch of times but I dont have time to peruse the whole board to get the answer so here goes:
What is the point of the girl with so many guys on the beach? why does she look kinda like a guy? At first I honestly thought it was a man pretending to be a woman. I mean she looked so messy when she first appears on scene, did they do somehting to her? Like was it a rape or soemthing? Why is peter crazy over that situation? Was he the guy she kicked and was that what made him insane?
and last but not least, that woman who was peter's assistant was so pale she looked a bit scary to me, but Im glad she wasnt murdered in it, she was likeable,lol.....
I haven't seen this movie in a long time, so this might be a bit fuzzy:
The reason that girl looks like a man is because she WAS a man. Argento hired a transexual to play the part, just to add to the sexual confusion and further blur the gender lines.
As for that scene, this is how i took it: That girl was like a town whore or something, who used to entertain all the horny high-school boys at her beach house. Peter, as a young man, offended her in some way (then yells at her and smacks her in the face) so she and the other boys chase him down the beach and beat him up. This seems to really confuse and humiliate Peter sexually. A while later, he murdered that girl, and got away with it, but the urge to kill never really left him.
and Peter's assistant, that's Daria Nicolodi, Argento's longtime girlfriend and and absolute goddess in the italian horror genre. Have you seen any of ther other work? She's excellent! Her scene at the end of Tenebre with her just screaming over and over again is brilliant!
My reading of the flashback is not that Peter offended the girl but that she turned him down because she didn't find him attractive (hence the thumbs down sign). Peter smacks her because he is sexually frustrated and humiliated. Then she sicks her boys on him - and really humliates him.
I think this sequence is one of the best things I have ever seen in any film. Brilliantly handled - tell us what we need to know - and more than that, makes us feel the humiliation that drives the killer to commit murder.
how come everyone else knew this but me? I mean was it that obvious to everyone else? Am I that slow? The only reason I figured it out was cuz her boobs and face looked kinda odd but to others im sure they missed it, or at least it is just my opinion....
By the way Daria is Asia's Mom? Wow this is all new info to me....
