Why are there so many different running times for the supposedly full uncut version of Tenebrae?
I have an Anchor Bay PAL version. It has 2002 on back cover, 2003 on actual dvd, which runs for a little over 96 min. On the back it says running time 105 min. This has Full Uncut Version on the front cover.
I have noticed versions that run for 101 min, 105 min. So whats the deal here, when the one I have is suppose to be the uncut version, but runs at 96 min?
Is this the real unedited, uncut version or what? Anyone know?
110 min is not true. The uncut version lasts somewhat 96 minutes, however Anchor Bay release is cut (but just a few seconds - a couple of stabs and characters walking into a hotel room). If you want totally uncut version try Dutch release by A-Film titled "Shadows" or a French one by TF1 Films, or any of the Japanise available. All the others have these couple of seconds cut.
I believe that the Anchor bay has only one scene that is shortened slightly, but the rest of the missing footage was actually just individual frames removed from the transfer due to print damage, the overall loss is about 20-25 seconds. If you want the absolutely complete and uncut version get the PAL Region 2 (although it is actually region 0) Raptor release out of Germany. The picture is amazing, comes with the English, German, and Italian original Dolby 2.0 audio tracks as well as English and German in 5.1 with good (removable) subtitles, both versions of the ending credits, an interview with Argento, a making of feature for the special effects, and a sound effects creation featurette. The total Running time is listed as 102 minutes for some reason, but the actual running time was 96 minutes and 51 seconds, so it would be about 100 minutes and 43 seconds NTSC without that 4% PAL speedup. In addition to the cut scenes, missing frames, PAL speedup, etc there are also a few other factors that can make a film a slight bit shorter or longer. Those versions of the film which used that replacement ending music as the standard ending music actually had about 4 or 5 seconds longer of a slightly different credit screen which added an additional copyright warning to make the credits last long enough to accommodate the music, while the original music was created to fit the credits exactly.
I've been looking for a number of Argento/Fulci films on DVD. It's surprising how many of them say 'uncut' on the cover, but have varying running times. Very annoying.
All the versions everyone has watched are all the same.
There's only one DVD version: Which is the Director's cut.
There used to be international TV channel display version; which has been cut to 96 minutes; deleting all the nudity, chopping off Jane's arm scene, and red shoed woman's beach fetish scene.
The longest version is the original footage before the linear editing. I've not seen that longest version (1 hour 50 minutes) either, but I'm pretty sure; other than the film and production crew themselves noone has watched that version either. In my idea, it should include some plot holes or spoilers; that's why they're deleted. And it's clear that the final cut was edited with unlinear format(today's editing technology).
Now, the best news for you... The director's cut; which is 100 minutes... It's available to watch on Youtube, since last summer(Summer 2009).
My copy of this came through the post this morning. I'm in the UK and have the 2006 Anchor Bay 'Uncut' Release. It's 96 mins long (despite the back of the box saying 105 mins), contains nudity and the arm chopping scene. There is something on the BBFC website that says 'due to the number of differing frames per second, a film will be shorter by approximately 4% when transferred to DVD. This does not mean the film has been cut or re-edited'. The theatrical release may have been 100 mins, but, using this logic, the DVD running at 96 mins makes sense. Then there's the whole PAL/NTSC thing between the USA and the UK. NTSC format (USA) is slower than the UK's PAL format, so the NTSC-formatted version will be longer. This does not mean the film is cut or edited in any way. Hope I haven't confused things further.
