Just a few years earlier, in the Seventies, the director had made another movie about SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, with very few films between his first outing and the remake. EXCALIBUR, anyone?

fail, fail again. Weeks didn't get a chance to fail third time, mercifully, because the director's chair got taken away from him after this debacle.
