Just saw it. It had some gritty scenes, but Maniac was a little gorier, I think. Plus, while Maniac has a better, more suspenseful story, Fulci chose to drown this movie into a boring detective-movie.

I think The New York Ripper was best. I was dissapointed of Maniac.

New York Ripper had some great suspense and a great "who done it" and good gore, but i think there could have been more kills! Maniac has great gore(savini's best), and some great suspense and probably my favorite killer in a slsher(besides jason vorhees)! i got to give it to MANIAC!

i came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and i'm all out of bubble gum

Maniac is good, but The New York Ripper is *MUCH* more gritty and 'filthy', for lack of a better description... also, Maniac shows early on who the killer is and explains why he does what he does to ladies, but The New York Ripper leads the audience around the cesspool that is the underbelly of New York City until the very end of the film; only then is the killer's identity revealed, after Fulci has drilled the idea that 'humanity is garbage' into the viewer's head.

The New York Ripper is more violent and ugly [ And extreme ] than Maniac, and is my personal favorite. I dig Maniac too, but it's no New York Ripper.

maybe i saw the cut version, it was on vhs, it said it was unrated but there was like 4 damn kills and pretty weak. aside from the kill towards the end involving a razor and an eyeball i was pretty bored. much like all of fulci's other movies, a lot of hype but just pretty boring

..white meat..dark meat..all will be carved

Um, how many kills do you need in a movie? If you're part of the Friday The 13th/Nightmare On Elm Street herd, then i guess i can understand you needing the bodies dropping like flies in order to be 'entertained'...

Those who can't look past the wacky dubbing and acting may find those aspects 'entertaining' when it comes to this movie, but i highly doubt The New York Ripper was created to be some sort of hit with most audiences; it's too weird and ugly. True, the majority of murder victims here are simply stabbed and/or sliced to death, but these scenes are filmed with so much underlying cruelty that they transcend so much else that 'horror' has to offer. When it comes to unflinching sadism, i think this movie makes every damn horror franchise look like sh~t.

as far as italian horror filmmakers go...i will take argento over fulci any day of the week...he has better actors, atmosphere, gore gags, music...and tenebre puts new york ripper to shame

Really? I prefer Fulci because of the amount of hatred he puts into his films. The majority of Argento's stuff doesn't have feeling, if you ask me.

i have to say Maniac! i love that movie, i like you are inside the Zito's head, it makes it REALLY CREEPY!!! and it also has a great amount of suspense.
New York Ripper was okay, not as good as i expected. The directing was good, but the only thing that really ruined it for me was Donald Duck voice. i hated that. so Maniac is my pick

reply

I would say Maniac is the better film but if your judging it by gore/sleaze i would have to go with New york ripper

reply

Both very perverse, but I think the headshot in Maniac is one of the most amazing make-up achievements in film. Close race but Maniac wins a tight one.

If you disagree with me and think I'm a total ass_hole, then why are you reading my signature?

I prefer the more brutal/shocking New York Ripper. My main reason for loving it more is due to the fact that it follows diverse character threads that eventually link up in some form : the disgruntled detective and the gay professor; the handsome young architect and his innocent girlfriend; the wealthy husband and wife who play sordid sex games; the sleazy greek gigolo.

Maniac on the other hand essentially follows Spinel around for 90% of the running time (with little focus on other characters). Luckily he plays the part magnificently and the film is truly frightening because of this. I still prefer NY Ripper's more elaborate plot and scope though.
