Not as disturbing as everyone says

This was a good film. Definitely not in the same league as Maniac which has a great story and performance from Joe Spinell.

I read a lot about this movie before I saw it which may be why I wasn't as freaked out as other people were when they first saw it. I also saw a lot of other Fulci films before I saw New York Ripper so I knew what to expect from Fulci.

I'm not just talking about shock value. People usually discuss the gloomy and negative atmosphere of the film, especially the subplot with the little girl in the hospital, as being very disturbing. It was a sad ending but I wasn't that bummed out. I don't know. I guess if you see enough slasher films, and giallos, you start to get jaded.

I feel the same way. I do think this is a good movie, as far as sleazy giallos go. One of Fulci's last good efforts before he went into his rapid decline. But it didn't really shock me. The infamous razor blade scene was pretty sick yes, but I otherwise unphased by everything else. All the perversion? Big deal... I've seen much worse in the crap they call "adult entertainment" these days. And let's face it, for all it's 'shock-value', this movie simply isn't as gory as other Fulci efforts like Zombie and The Beyond. I suppose it isn't supposed to be as gory either. But this films reputation is a little undeserved IMO.

The film's bad reputation isn't really to do with the amount of violence/gore, but the fact that all the violence is sex-related. I can't really think of any other film like this.

People have always had this reaction. You can have 200 people beaten to a pulp or blown to smithereens in the most gruesome way possible and nobody bats an eyelid - but even a single scene of rape or sexual assault causes offence and may even result in a ban. I guess people see women as more vulnerable - both in movies and in real life. I dunno.

Agreed.

There you go. Zombie and The Beyond don't even compare with T.N.Y.R. As for contemporary 'adult entertainment' - why bother comparing that with a movie made in the early '80s? Give me a break.

I would not watch it with people who are sensitive to graphic violence towards women, but I did not find NYR to be that especially disturbing. Hell, I was a kid when this movie was out, it is over twenty-five years old. There was been a lot worse since then. I have seen a lot of hardcore horror films myself and just do not react to many of them anymore.

I expected more gore personally, and was a little surprised (but not offended) by the degree of graphic sex. Still, there were three scenes that made me cringe... the sex worker who was stabbed to death in the groin by a broken bottle (wow, really?), the infamous nipple-slice, and the guy who gets half his face blown off. The rest of the violence seemed pretty much run-of-the-mill for giallo exploitation horror. It was an OK film, but a little disappointing. I just preferred his earlier movies (Duckling, Zombi, City, Beyond, Cemetery) to this one.
