and Brian Dennehy gives an excellent performance as the bad tempered father just as depicted in the book. To sum it up though, both the literary and film adaptation were on an average level story-wise.

There is no Split Image novel. The OP is probably referring to Josh Freed's book Moon Webs that the author adapted into the Canadian movie Ticket to Heaven (1981), which has a couple of borderline copyright-infringement-level of similarities with Split Image (1982).
