Do you think Mickey would have liked Apollo training Rocky?

What was his opinion of Apollo? Since he didn't live to see them become friends.

He knew that, even though they went through two wars in the ring, that Rocky and Apollo had respect for each other so I am sure he would have liked it, especially since he couldn't be there.

I think so. Its pretty clear Mickey had a lot of respect for Apollo.

Interesting thing about it, Mickey at first didn't believe Rocky could beat Clubber, but in the end he finds faith in him. Of course the first fight proved that Mickey's first assessment was correct, Rocky couldn't beat Clubber in the state he was in, not training properly and lack of hunger. Even so right before the fight he still believes in Rocky.

I think a more interesting question would be if Mickey would have believed that Rocky could be converted into a boxer, since he had always trained him as a brawler and puncher. Did Mickey simply not know enough to convert Rocky into a boxer, or did he not believe that Rocky could be molded into one?

Mickey was old school so I would assume that he would think that there was no reason to try and make a fighter into something they aren't. So if a fighter is a natural brawler then you train them like a brawler.

I like this thread, because this is an original idea and the OP brings up a good point. I personally think as far as what Mickey would think of Apollo training Rocky if he were alive to have seen it, he would be indifferent to it. He wouldn't be opposed to it, but I don't think he'd be doing backflips either. Reason being is because he likely believed Rocky was cut from a different cloth and he would want to "retain" that.

One of the posters was right, Mickey definately respected Apollo very much.

and don't forget that BOTH Mickey AND Apollo told Rocky that he couldn't stand toe to toe with Clubber

The original script of Mickey had him as a very mean person. Very, very racist against blacks. Glad they cut that stuff out for the final script.

"You do that bah you better do it right. BAAAAAAHHHHHH"

I think he did see them become friends. Apollo was immediately gracious when Rocky finally beat him. Remember how he tossled his hair? Mickey didn't see them become close like they would eventually become, but Mickey knew they were already friendly with each other. I think Mickey would be grateful to Apollo because he showed Rocky some things that he couldn't have taught him, and most importantly, helped him get his edge back. Mickey couldn't have been as effective in doing that. A fresh perspective is what Rocky needed.

I have in my mind an 'alternate quantum state" story where Mickey is rushed to the hospital and does not die, but is too weak to train rocky so Apollo does just like in the regular reality and he gets to see Rocky win on the hospital television, I like to imagine how proud of him Mickey would be seeing him beat Clubber.

But my alternate universe version has Mickey alive in Rocky 4. If Mickey was this upset about Rocky facing Clubber Lang how would he feel about Rocky fighting someone WAY more powerful and even tougher than Clubber and in my alternate reality Mickey watches Apollo get beaten to death. Rocky facing Drago would probably be too much for Mickey.

Well, if Mickey hadn't died, Apollo would never have trained him for the rematch. I don't think Mickey hated Apollo and did respect him, since he was the champ before Rocky.
