Who do you guys think won the friendly fight at the end?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I want to know everyone's view as to who won the match between Rocky and Apollo at the end? I'd say Rocky all the way simply for the fact that Rocky now had Apollo's boxing skills along with HIS skills that helped him beat Apollo in the second movie.

reply

They imply it was a draw....best leave it at that, in the spirit of the film.

reply

Yeah but if they ever did fight for real a third time Rocky would win for reasons stated above.

reply

In the context and reality of the films, they're obviously evenly matched fighters. It would be very close and come down to a decision. Probably go either way.

reply

In the first two films I thought Apollo was a way better fighter but by the time the third movie came around then yeah, they became evenly matched I just think it would be harder for Apollo to punish Rocky like he did in the first two films being that he now has the ability to dance around, jab etc.

reply

My guess is they probably went several rounds, got tired of beating on each other, and just called it a draw. I think Apollo was probably pleased with himself and got over his previous defeat to Rocky.

reply

I would tend to agree. I think that's why the freeze frame of their fists meeting in the middle was done at the end of the film....to imply that they were pretty much equals. Better yet, that they were in the 'spirit' of being equals...and were satisfied with that. At that stage, it was more of a friendly rivalry and they were at peace with it.

Agreed. There's no way they went all out for that third friendly match. I think Apollo would win in a friendly match because he's so much faster. The only way Rocky can win is by a knockout.

Now in a hypothetical match where they're going all out, I think Rocky would win. In this movie, Rocky finally learns how to dodge punches & keep his hands up (somewhat). That would've made a [b]world[b] of difference in his first two fights against Apollo. Combine that new defensive capability with Rocky's youth and ability to take hundreds of punches to the face. He'd be unstoppable.

I believe another poster had it about right. They both had spirit and pride, but they also had a bond from their first fights and now a strong friendship. They would have fought hard as the warriors they were, but not with the intent to harm the other. So they probably went at it pretty good for a few rounds but with both being limber boxers at this point, there were likely no major blows.

I sort of think that when Rocky beat Clubber and Apollo saw Rocky fighting him using his style...that it was sort of like him reliving winning the title again..that it was like Apollo was champion again. Even though most don't consider it part of the franchise; in Rocky 5, Rocky viewed Tommy much the same way..sort of reliving his youth and victories through a protege. But unlike Tommy, Rocky had the highest respect for Apollo and became life-long friends.

So the fight itself was probably pretty close to a draw. I'd give a slight nod to Apollo for technique perhaps..but Rocky has shown he can absorb and dish out more damage.

Very well said.

I have to say Apollo. He trained Rocky, and possibly had some other moves he didn't show him. Plus, I hate to say this but if it wasn't for the knockout in part 2 I think he would have won again.

Apollo won. He's the better and more talented fighter.

Remember Rocky is the quintessential underdog. He only pulls out everything he's got to win *IF* everything is on the line, and through pure heart & determination. Thats where he is at his best. And i don't see him having anywhere remotely enough determination to put up much effort for a mere "friendly" sparring match.

If they had a 2nd rematch for the belt? Rocky would win it again.

But on an average everyday basis? Apollo is simply better and would take the sparring match for sure.

reply

I agree with ya until Rocky 3 where Apollo had instilled his fighting ability to Rocky. Basically, Rocky had it all after Apollo trained him.

reply

I think Rocky roughed him up and decided to "throw in the towel" himself. Apollo would have been rusty and Rocky had just come off the toughest fight of his life. It may explain why Apollo has so many insecurity issues in Rocky IV.

reply

I read it the other way, I think he beat Rocky fairly easily when Rocky was taking it easy, which is why he was so full of his own shít in Rocky IV thinking he had retired too early and that he was in the best shape of his life.

Apollo Creed.

I'm gonna say Apollo; 1, Rocky just came from a brutal bout and Creed was fresh; 2, Apollo trained him; 3, Rocky fights great, but Apollo is a great fighter; 4, At the opening of Rocky 4 Rocky has a black eye and a hat from Apollo; 5, Apollo is so full of himself at the beginning of 4 and this puts that in perspective.

Thank you for all your opinions but I think I'll stick with mine. Rocky was just too good by then.

I'd say in the first film that Apollo was the better fighter, and the only reason Rocky went the distance was because he was so determined to do so. He knew he was in with a much better fighter, and had to fight the fight of his life just to get a draw. Apollo had more big-fight experience than Rocky, and was probably the better fighter.

By the third film, Rocky had improved in experience and confidence and with Apollo's help improved technique-wise. However Apollo's career was over, had been inactive for five years and was slightly older than Rocky. Assuming this was a real fight and Rocky wasn't just taking it easy on him, Rocky has the edge.

I see the second film as the only one where they were equally matched and could've gone either way. Rocky took the win, but if they'd had a third fight a few months later it could easily have gone to Apollo.

reply

Yeah, but doesn't Rocky Return home at the start of ROCKY IV with a black eye, given to him by Apollo. Not entirely sure if this sequence was meant to follow on from the end of ROCKY III, but it certainly seems that way (given said fights inclusion in ROCKY IV?)

Maybe if Apollo did win the friendly bout, then it may explain his willingness to get back in the ring against Drago?

Apollo due to the opening scene in Rocky 4.
