Apollo was a much better trainer than Mickey

I think because Creed was younger and actually doing the workouts WITH him, he comes off as a "better trainer", but Mick helped a lot during the fights AGAINST Creed...and brought out Rocky's heart.

Look at it this way: both of them helped Rocky win the title.

I will say that between Mick's initial training and Apollo's "boot camp" style training, Rocky became an unbeatable BEAST after that! He likely would've handed Tommy Gunn his a$$ had they fought in the ring as well.

Totally agreed. About Apollo and Mickey, it's like apples and oranges, they were both awesome trainers in their own way, Mickey was a better trainer mentally but physically I would definitely say Apollo I mean Rocky became a full-fledged boxer after Apollo's teachings. One thing they do have in common is they don't seem to let Rocky mourn after losing a loved one like in Rocky 2 after Adrian goes into a coma it seems all that Mickey was concerned about was Rocky getting into shape and in Rocky 3 after losing Mickey it seemed Apollo was more concerned with getting Rocky to defeat Clubber Lang.
shareSometimes when a loved one is ill or has passed away you want to keep yourself busy. Buster Douglas upset Mike Tyson while mourning the death of his mother 23 days before the fight. Additionally the mother of Douglas' son was facing a severe kidney ailment and he had contracted the flu on the day before the fight.
I don't know if Apollo was a better trainer than Mickey. But Apollo's training looked much more modern.
My favorite shot from a Rocky training montage was from "Rocky 2" when assistant trainer Johnny hit Rocky in the stomach when he was doing sit ups. That looked so incredibly bada$$.
Two other training moments from the first two movies that I liked: from the first movie when they're hitting Rocky in the guts with the medicine ball (why did they call it that?). The look on Rocky's face says it all. From the second one is when he's squat-walking with that big log on his shoulders, stops, catches his breath briefly, and then goes back to the squat-walking. All of the other training sequences seemed like they edited out Rocky catching a breath. This shot shows that he's REALLY putting in the work!

A medicine ball (also known as an exercise ball, a med ball, or a fitness ball) is a weighted ball roughly the diameter of the shoulders (approx. 13.7 inches), and is often used for rehabilitation and strength training. The medicine ball also serves an important role in the field of sports medicine. That is probably how it got the name.
shareI could see "exercise" or "fitness" ball more than "medicine".

Mickey cared about Adrian's health and Rocky's emotional situation. After all, he spent countless hours in the hospital alongside Rock. But when Adrian told Rocky to "win," Rocky was ready to go and so was Mickey.

Its True-But Mickey gave Rocky more than training-he was like a second father to him-and Rocky Loved him-and wanted to make him proud. Still Mickey knew everything there was about fighting but by the time we get to Rocky 3 Mickey is about 80 and not feeling his best anyway-he want Rocky to retire but Rocky manages to talk him in to the last fight with Clubber-Mickey knew Rocky couldn't win the fight-But he loved Rocky so much-and believed in him so much that he thought maybe it would all work out. Just as Mickey became a father to Rocky, Rocky became a son to him.
Rocky is all about orphans who find each other and start their own family.
After Clubber inadvertently caused Mickey's Heart attack-and the Rocky lost to Clubber-he was broken and Appollo was able to motivate him using all that-who is to say without all that and Rocky living the high life that Apollo could have got what he got out of Rocky.
I often wonder how the fight might have gone had Mickey not collapsed.

He still would have lost imo maybe not in the second round but in the 6th or seventh I mean his training was mediocre at best for the first bout.
shareBut, according to Apollo, most of Clubber's KOs came in early rounds. I think if Rocky had been able to last past the fifth, he might have tired Clubber out.
"There will be blood. Oh, yes! There will be blood."-Jigsaw; "Saw II"
Yeah but Rocky didn't have the technique that he had in the second fight it was basically a puncher vs. puncher bout with strength going to Clubber Lang so I believe Clubber's hooks might have been too much for Rocky to handle plus Clubber was more determined and had trained really hard for the first fight.
shareEven before Apollo's training, Rocky seemed faster than Clubber. He may have been able to employ a little more defense to last.
"There will be blood. Oh, yes! There will be blood."-Jigsaw; "Saw II"
Clubber seemed quick as well like in their first fight Rocky tries to punch hook Clubber and he quickly ducked. Also, Rocky threw a string of punches at Clubber in the first fight even lifting him off the canvas but it seemed to have no effect.
shareMickey is the best. In Rocky V, Rocky even says he was his angel.
Your chains are still mine, you belong to me! - The Phantom Of The Opera
He called him his angel because he basically raised him.
shareI think Mickey was a good old-fashioned trainer and his relationship with Rock was something else but Apollo's training style for Rocky was definitely better for Rock in the long run because he had learned how to duck, dance, and play it smart whereas Mick's training wasn't good for Rock in the long run because his "beat on me until he tires himself out" strategy could only last so long. After Rocky 2 I would say yes it may be smarter to retire but after Apollo gave Rocky his skills I think it further extended his boxing career.
shareI always felt Mickey was a good trainer but in a very old-fashioned kind of way. He just wanted to push Rocky's strength and speed as far as humanly possible. His goal was to make every punch that Rocky threw do serious damage to the opponent.
Apollo on the other hand knew that Rocky need more than just power to defeat Clubber Lang. Not only would he need strength, he would need to learn how to fight efficiently. He teaches him how to punch correctly, how to defend himself and how to move around the ring. Up until this point, Rocky didn't really know how to approach his opponent and avoid being hit. He just took the punches and relied on brute strength. In Rocky III however, Rocky not only learnt how to fight but also how to read his opponent and use his weaknesses against him.
"We'll be alive but like a nightmare. You drink blood, you won't wake up from nightmare."
Creeds character was a tribute to Mohammed Ali....float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Rocky was based on Jake Lamotta or Marciano....a brawler with an iron jaw. Creeds training reflected his style of speed, reach, and technique. Mickeys idea of a fighter was brawn and endurance.

Apollo taught Rocky how to defend himself and not use his face to block every single punch. I'd say Apollo is the better trainer.
