rocky never heard of clubber lang??

So rocky has NO IDEA who the #1 ranked contender in his division is? He hasnt been watching the other fights and keeping up on who's who? How could he not only not know whos ranked number 1 but not ever heard of him.?? How "unbelievabledly" gay. Rock says to mick I can beat this guy. How does he know he's never even heard of him?

Where did it say Rocky had never heard of Clubber Lang? And he didn't say he could beat him, (although I'm sure he thought he could), he said he wanted to fight him.

When he showed up at Rocky's statue ceremony I never got the impression Rocky had never heard of him. First thing Rocky said to Clubber was that he had a big mouth, if he had never heard of him he would have undoubtedly asked him who he was.

Also, Clubber said to Rocky, "I told you I wasn't going away!" This seems to suggest they had had run ins before even.

Rocky had no clue who clubber was at the statue ceremony.and in micks bedroom rocky says I can beat this guy why don't u want me to fight him n mick says cuz he's hungry and will drop u w in 3 rounds. Mick knew who he was rocky...rocky had no clue

I don't think Rock ever heard of Clubber Lang. When Rock said "you've got a big mouth", he was going by that current moment when he was running his mouth to Rocky and when Clubber said "I told you I wasn't going away" he was probably talking to Mickey and those other times had expected Mick to relay those messages to Rocky kind of like how CLubber was assuming Rocky had been ducking him when we know that wasn't the case and that Mickey was hiding Rock from Clubber. As for not asking who he was, Rock just saw him as a challenger and was to be expected.

In the original script and novelization there is a scene at the wrestling match where Clubber challenges Rocky before he gets in the ring with Thunderlips..Rocky tells him something to the effect of he'll fight him or to wait his turn or something and then Mickey jumps in tells Rocky that he'll decide when and where and who he fights...

reply

No, he didn't know who he was. Mick tells this to Rocky in the room when they are sitting down and talking after the statue ceremony. Mick says that the fighters Rocky fought were decent, good fighters but not killers like this guy. He was fed decent fighters and fighters with styles that he could beat so he could defend the title for a long time without sustaining even worse damage. Mick had gotten word about him and then went to study him by going to Clubber's fights. Clubber taunted and called him out to give him his title shot. Rocky was consumed with other things like tv shows, magazine covers, photo shoots. The German champ was probably the best opponent from Rocky's title run.

reply

Exactly. I can't believe rocky didn't hear of him. Let's pretend Rock was doing interviews n movies n *beep* n was busy, wouldn't anyone of the guys interviewing him say "have u seen clubber, he's fking guys up"...or he didn't pick up a ring magazine and read about him? I know rocky was under a rock n being protected by mick....but seems a little too hard to believe. I guess he just shows up to fight and never studied his opponents..I dunno. Seems like there was a flaw in the script or something was cut out.

I dont remember this specifically, but this is definitely a WTF plothole. Was Rock under a rock?

reply

I would say, yeah, he was under a rock.

He seemed to be mostly enjoying his newfound fame and fortune (who wouldn't), and just let Mick handle all the fight set ups.

Let's be bad guys.

This, plus let's not forget this was the 1980's. No Internet, no social media, no DVR, none of that. If you were not reading newspapers or watching the three local channels at the right time you would not have a clue about much at all going on in the world.

Then it comes down to if Mick is keeping him current on other fighters, which it seems that he must not have been.

I knew about every US based fighter in the 80's and I lived in the UK.

I had KO Magazine and the Ring Magazine to thank and they were issued monthly.

The heavyweight champion of the world would know who the top contenders were in his division. Its a major ploy hole.
