Massive Pink Floyd fan. I've seen the live show by Roger Waters and have listened to the album countless times. However I really think this film is just plain poor. Dull, really obvious and probably the least successful telling of the Wall story that they ever did.
Anyone else feel the same? Or am I just a minority?

I appreciate that response man, I thought i'd get absolutely flamed for saying what I felt. I've only seen it the once - maybe it needs a few more, which I'll definitely give it one day.
Just on a first time basis - I understood everything, but cinematically it wasn't good to look at, the music didn't always gel and all the sequences seemed really obvious. The animation was incredible, but again - that's relevant to the live shows too.
When I say things felt obvious - I mean it just felt very standard, as if a film didn't need to be made. When I listen to "Mother" - I imagine he's trying to confide in his mum at home, whilst knowing fully well she's mommy coddling him. In the film - he's cradling a pillow pretending he's cradling his mother. Again - Another Brick in the Wall is pretty underwhelming, I take it that the song is a statement about how horrible teachers destroy any talent and spark in children, therefore the schools churn out the same, blank kids - like bricks in a wall.
And what is the cinematic equivalent? Loads of children walking in a line around different parts of the school, then falling into a meat grinder.
I don't know if you can appreciate what i'm saying, it just feels pretty tame and I didn't enjoy that.

Lol, I think you're the first Floyd fan I've heard of that disliked it. But eh, if you're a fan and it didn't work for you then fair enough. I grew up on it though, so I'll always have a soft spot for it.
"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"
I think of it as a fascinating failure. It could have been something monumental and amazing, but due to many factors including fighting amonst the creative team, make it sort of a jumbled mess...
There is still a lot of really good stuff. Some interesting elements are definitely there, and it gets plenty of points just for some of the music being there, but it's really one of the great missed opportunities in recent film history.
For what it's worth most of the people involved in making it hate it as well.
Yeah, there was a lot of fighting about the creative direction. Gerald Scarfe and Roger Waters disagreed with Alan Parker's take on everything and the result was that nobody was happy. I think Scarfe said he didn't understand why people liked it, and Waters described it as the weakest interpretation of the Wall story, or something along those lines. There's a lot of info around on the whole debacle online.
And Parker referred to it as the most expensive student film he has ever seen.... I may not agree with your opinion, but I will defend to the death your right to disagree!
I am a huge Floyd fan, and I too despise this movie. It was just on and I happened to catch in 20 minutes in and made it through to around the halfway mark before wanting to cut my face off...Great album, terrible movie!
i have seen it many many times (under the influence and not...lol) and its defineitely not a great film. But the animation is good and i like some of the extra musical bits.
But dont feel bad, Roger Waters himself said he doesnt like it either.
To be fair, I don't think the album it is based on is all that great either. It has some great songs, all of which were co-written by Gilmour. Some of the other songs are OK, but in my opinion, only the Gilmour/Waters songs have stood the test of time (with the exception of "Mother").
As an album, I think The Wall was way overrated. In my opinion, even the Final Cut is more listenable.
Afraid I must agree. Recently saw The Wall for the first time on Palladia. What a mess. Seems many really liked the animation but for me it looked like Monty Python cartoons and about as thrown together. At least MP cartoons usually had a punchline.
It tried too hard to be dark and grotesque. The result was the visuals needlessly overpowered the music.
