So they say the guys that into town to be trained are just using them, ok I get that part. Someone explain why this is the case. Is it impossible for one to fall in love with a local girl? I mean yes he falls in love with Paula, but there was a point in the movie where he was ignoring her and wanted to cut all ties with her. I didn't get that, why couldn't he just admit he wanted to be with her? I didn't understand what the problem was.

shareOn the one hand, yes, it should be possible to fall in love. On the other hand, the local girls were all (or mostly) lower class factory workers, while the guys were up-and coming pilots and officers who could snag "better" wives.
Ok I get it now, they just wanted someone better off in life and never thought they would fall in love with one of those girls.
shareI guess some of the officer candidates went out with the local girls then dumped them as soon as they finished the course.
