I read this too, but I find it just too hard to believe, especially the idea of Denver playing the role of Zack Mayo. I mean, could you imagine Denver in the fights scenes on the street outside of the bar and in the hanger with Foley? (LOL)

Gere eventually beat out all the other actors for the part. John Travolta turned down the role as he did with American Gigolo (another Richard Gere hit).
The role of Paula was originally given to Sigourney Weaver, then to Anjelica Huston and later to Jennifer Jason Leigh, who dropped out to do Fast Times at Ridgemont High instead. Eventually, Debra Winger replaced Leigh for the role of Paula. Rebecca De Mornay, Meg Ryan, and Geena Davis (all virtually unknowns at the time) auditioned for the role of Paula.
