You get thrown a huge curve ball at the end. I watched this movie 14 years ago on late night tv. Possible fox or ktla here in LA I bought the DVD last week and watched it again it's a great story and really would like to see if they would remake it or at least explain the ending.

You obviously missed the longer director's cut. In that version, Gary drives back to the party with a Thompson sub-machine gun and puts a bullet in everyone including himself as he screams, "Karen!" over and over again. The ending unfortunately inspired many serial killings in the '90's.

Every "Nice Guy" should be made to required to watch this movie.
Nothing wrong with being a "Nice Guy", but most are spineless wimps.
One can be a Nice Guy and not be a Doormat at the same time.
Unfortunately, Gary was the former and not the latter and what happened to him typically happens to those type of guys.
You can be a nice guy and have b.a.l.l.s too,so Rick is a better person/boyfriend than him?
Not to mention that Karen is a w.h.o.r.e.
I saw this movies back in the summer of 82 when I was 16 and the end was gut wrenching. I guess I was a decent guy and seeings a dude who was much like me made me feel for the character.
