My guess would be as soon as Karen got home. Karen called Rick and said, " Everything has been taken care of. Can you come to my party tonight, I really miss you!!"
Rick knowing that he is going to get some action, shows up and gets ready to score.
When they were at Gary's Grandma's house having breakfast, Gary asked her if she was missing anyone (from the ski trip). Karen said something about making up for it at her party. That should have been a sign that trouble was coming for Gary.
