Gary was a "nice guy" beta male, which is why Karen passed him over

Gary was too meek, too needy, and too much of a stalker/observer.

The ending of the movie came as no surprise to me, since that would have been the realistic ending in any real life scenario where a similar situation occured.

The fact that Gary would actually pay for a girl's abortion (who got impregnated by another guy) goes to show that he lacks boundaries & principles. He's obsessively infatuated with Karen and he winds up learning the hard lesson of what happens to guys who are obsessively needy.

This film should be shown to every guy in high school as an example of how NOT to attract a woman.

Some of the comments attacking Gary are ridiculous and I agree. How worldly would a fifteen year old boy be, realistically? There are men twice his age who are far worse. At least he was better than that jerk Rick. Karen is pathetic, if she can't see what a slimeball Rick is, deserves him. Then again, how does anyone expect fifteen year olds to really act?

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

Gonna have to agree with the OP: at that age it's the sharks that got all the little fish. Saw it a million times growing up. The coolest, the funniest, are the ones that got talked about the most on the phone.

Shoot, even now.... The good looking and/or bad boy types are the ones who usually always get the girl. I've always been the noble type like Gary. Except I'm not as stupid, nor am I creepy like him. Still, I've been regarded as the sweetest and most noble dude on earth and most reliable dude but I never leave the friend zone, despite how many hints I put out towards romantic interest.

It's a shame cuz since so many women I've fancied think and have taste like Karen, it's given me a dim view on the hopes of dating. I always have that fear that I will be passed up for a Rick-type of fellow which I have a few times and I can't stand it. I think she and Rick deserve each other too. Idiots.
