Aside from the clothes, music, heh... But gary (16) is depicted walking to his car literally falling down drunk and then driving away. Clearly this was before MADD became a force. No major studio would dare release a movie with such a scene now.

MADD does have a lot of sway and would raise holy hell if a scene like this were depicted in a movie, especially one aimed at the teen market. (Unless something bad happens to the character).
I kind of see their point I suppose. People, espeecially teens, emulate what the see others doing. On the other hand, this scene is entirely realistic for the time period. I guess it's the life imitating art imitating life debate.
Please explain, where is that law/rule written? MADD telling people what scenes they can have in their movies, teenagers not being able to be in movies with boobs. It all makes me feel sort of sick.
I have been saying for years Hollywood would NEVER make a movie like this again with such carefree attitudes toward abortion, cocaine, drunk driving and underage sex.

Yeah, it's better if the producers and MPAA moralists make the decisions about what can be in films so that public won't have to decide what's okay or make their own value judgments. It hurts to think for oneself--I'm glad these brave souls are doing it for us.
Interesting point. I was about the same age as Gary when this movie came out and we used to drive home completely smashed all the time. No one cared then.
Agreed. I actually laughed out loud when watching it again today for the first time in like 20 years when Big Apple walks Gary to his car, says "You sure you don't want me to drive you home? Alright... well drive safe!" Different times back then.
Ahhh...the good old days. Before political correctness & bubblewrapping the world/nanny state.
We've come a long way and a lot of the changes aren't so good.
Back then before the demonization of drinking and driving, cops had to pay serious attention to other distracted drivers, such as little old ladies who plow into crowds of people at Farmers markets. Today the Q-tip brigade gets away with murder on the streets while a person who has a couple drinks with dinner at a restaurant is demonized. Yes. Thank you for that Madd.
Look. I lost a son to Luekemia..I understand to lose a child is unbearable pain. But I didn't start a full-on campaign to demonize all doctors because my son couldn't be saved.
All people who have a drink or two aren't a danger behind the wheel. Their cause had worthy meaning and good intent, but it's been taken way overboard.
It's not illegal to have a drink or two and drive. Every time you get something from the DMV (in Cal., at least...) they also send you a little chart, showing you the approximate amount of drinks you could likely digest, per your weight, and still be within the legal limit.
You are forgetting one key part of that scene. His friend David literally WALKS HIM TO HIS CAR in order for him to drive himself home. And this is after watching him doing his best impression of Slash drinking JD from the bottle the whole night. Whatta friend.
According to the filming dates section, this movie was lensed in November of 1981.. I don't think a lot of states had D.U.I.S yet. fro example. I live in PA and it didn't officially become a law until Jan of 1983.
