Karen and Rick at the football field

(Or I think it was a football field ?)

Anyway, I realize Rick was a first class a$$, but does anyone else think it was one of the sweetest (young) love scenes ever??? Maybe it's the perfect but heart wrenching song "Oh No" by the Commodores playing, or maybe it's just because I remember what it was like with my first love (who luckily WAS NOT a jerk! Haha), but if you had just watched THAT scene only, Rick is very gentle and respectful towards her.

I realize he was a total d-bag, but in just that scene, they were beautiful. I thought Diane Franklin portrayed her emotions as a hopeful, scared, yet infatuated young girl perfectly in that moment. Other than Endless Love, I can't think of a more romantic portrayal of lovemaking with teens. In most teen comedies, sex is portrayed as something rushed and comical,

Yes, I'm a girl, but more than any other teen movie, that scene just takes me back to that flood of all-consuming emotion that is only felt at that time in our lives. Again, I'm sure that song is part of it too!

reply

I agree. I was confused about that scene. Was Gary there watching them?

reply

Yes! At least for a minute or two. It showed him driving up to the field and then starting to climb up the bleachers and it appeared as though he KIND OF saw them but hen I think he ran back to his car and then went back to the restaurant they ere all hanging out at. But then later, Rick and Karen returned and Rick tells Gary he "f^<ked Karen" and Gary yells at him calling him a liar. Sooo....we get the impression that he didn't ACTUALLY see anything.

reply

Yeah I figured. Was a good young love scene. If Gary actually watched it he probably would've lost it.

reply

Haha! Yes, that would've been awful for him. In the movies today (or in today's real world even) someone would've possibly been shot. So sad. I was just a bit younger than the character/actors but back then...violence would've never even occurred to most of us! I feel for people who have teenagers today! What a mess it seems like society has become. I mostly love the movies for the nostalgia of what I feel was a better (and safer) time! Gosh.....I'm officially sounding old ๐Ÿ˜ณ

reply

No not old. You sound real hahah. I was born in 1991 and still feel the greatness of 80s nostalgia in these movies and I wasn't even around back then!!

reply

Aww! Haha! Good for you. You sound like a smart person. It was a great decade. I don't like being in my 40's but there are memories I wouldn't trade for anything. The decade began with the Winter Olympics and the USA winning the gold medal in hockey....and that set the tone for a great decade of renewed patriotism (President Reagan helped) and once Reagan stood up to Gorbachov we started to feel safe again, for the most part the economy was good, and great music and Prince! And....wow....I could go on and on. I'm sure you've heard it all but it really was an incredible decade. I was born in 1970 so obviously I was ages 10-20 in the 80's and had a frickin' blast. It's very bittersweet for me too. My Dad is now gone and some of my best memories surround him in those years.....starting with those Olympics. I'll stop boring you, I suppose!

reply

No! not boring at all. Glad to read it.

reply

I'm having a hard time seeing that as this sweet, adorable love scene. I'd tend to see it more in the way that Victor did. He took her to the football field to pop her cherry. It's as simple as that.

reply

There is no doubt Rick is a jerk. We all know his true intentions and lack of emotion or empathy later when she tells him she is pregnant. I was simply saying that if all anyone saw was that 2 minutes of the movie (minus Victor, Gary and David's discussion just before) than he was slowly getting her into that "position" (if you will). He did not throw her on the table and go at her without a kiss like some men try to do. Hell, I've known grown men who go for broke in 3 seconds. Or I should say men who TRY ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜€!!! Again, yes, in the rest of the entire movie he was a complete horn-dog a hole!!!! I was only saying that he looked at her, kissed her, and approached her JUST IN THAT MOMENT with kindness.

reply

I get what you're saying. The fact that it was on the bleachers of a football field sorta killed it for me.

reply

Haha! Yes well again, if I think back to high school....what were the options, really?? An uncomfortable car (where a cop could catch you), a parent's basement or your room (where your parents or a sibling could catch you)...honestly, given those options, the announcer's box at the top of the bleachers isn't bad choice. You could see cops or anyone else driving up and have plenty of time to get dressed! I realize it's not terribly comfortable or classy but what high school kids can afford a room at the Ritz? Or even a motel 8 for that matter! Ultimately, however, comfort and romance are about WHO you're with...not WHERE. Just my belief.

reply

It's true about limited options. I'm not one to talk about the field thing. I've done that myself. Maybe just as I get older I don't find anything romantic about teen sex and the fact that it was a football field on top of that made it worse. I'm not blaming them for doing it.

reply

Sure, teenage sex is usually bad and unsexy and mechanical but given all that, it was still a time of way less stress (at least in my life) and such hopeful ignorant bliss. The nostalgia is why I like the movie. Af far as the football field....It's better than a baseball field to me .... I hate baseball haha! I know...a dumb little joke.
