When I saw this movie back in 1982.
I honestly wondered if Gary was gay. I was 16 had the hots for Rose and wondered exactly why he kept ignoring her. Creepy!

Same here. I saw this movie back in the summer of 82 when I was 16 and thought Rose a keeper.
shareI can understand how, at that age, Gary couldn't feel for Rose the way he felt for Karen. Been there, done that. When I was 17 or 18, there was this girl who liked me, but I had the hots for her friend, who was rather aloof towards me. But that didn't stop me from focusing my attention on her, at the expense of the one who liked me.
As for Gary, I was completely in his corner when he got screwed at the end. Now decades later, I think he acted quite creepy throughout the movie. It's funny how getting older changes one's perspective.
me too, he was creepy..
shareAnd it started the first time he saw her at the ice cream place. He just stared at her, and after about 10-15 seconds or so of that, she just kind-of shrugged her shoulders and left, while he ordered the exact same ice cream flavor that she did.
I am back with a new username (formerly ajcdjb).
That's exactly how I felt. My view changed watching it years later as an adult.
