These wimps today would've come back and shot up the place

Seriously! You're right. Such a sad world it's become. Some people on these boards keep saying this movie is depressing. I find it uplifting simply for the nostalgia of a time when what you talk about WOULDN'T have been done. As you said, they just would've taken the hit and moved on. If anything is depressing, it's TODAY'S world!
shareKids today can't deal with disappointment. They're ready to shoot up a school and commit suicide over anything. Gary ended up on top. He learned a life lesson.

Well said, Omoxus. It's about life lessons and what we can learn from them. I loved the ending of this movie because it was more realistic and truer to actual life.
But then again, a modern day version of this movie would've celebrated a pregnant 15-year-old. She would've carried the baby to term, taken maternity leave and given special privileges when she returned to school for continuing her education and child-care. When she eventually drops out, she's given a honorary diploma just for participating in high school.
I digress. Back to the movie...
At worst, Gary and Rick would have had a fist fight and either become stronger friends or part ways forever. Karen would've just gone to find someone else eventually and Rick would've found another victim.
I miss the eighties.
Yeah, I think this film did it right (haven't seen it in its entirety since 2002, but it's fresh in my mind), and it seems to me that a lot of individuals today are just looking for an excuse to unload (literally).
