this needs to be released on DVD

This was a great b-movie sci-fi flick - an "Alien" rip-off, but with some clever plot elements.

When will it get the DVD treatment?

reply

So true.

I actually like all the band ALien rip-off's and I still haven't seen Forbidden World/Mutant. According to imdb, this is a follow-up/sequel to Galexy of Terror, so now I definitely have to see it! I hope both films get released on DVD real soon.

They released a DVD version in Germany... if you want to go through that import route. No telling when Corman will release this movie from his vaults, but he has been releasing his movies recently. Hopefully this title will be on that list soon.

It's not a direct sequel to GOT. The only similarities is that they used the leftover sets and tried to incorporate the look of it.

I ordered it from here http://www.xploitedcinema.com/dvds/dvds.asp?title=760

There is actually a director's cut of Mutant (AKA Forbidden World) at UCLA Archives with 12 minutes of pure, outrageous comedy that was deleted (unhappily) from the movie after the first sneak preview. Mutant was not a sequel to Galaxy Of Terror, but was started on the spaceship set of Galaxy Of Terror (designed by Jim Cameron). The set was available for one day, a Sunday, because first unit shot on it during the week, second unit shot on Saturday and the set was redressed on Monday as a burnt set. Roger Corman asked Allan Holzman on the Tuesday before that Sunday to create a 7 to 8 minute opening of a space movie that could go anywhere. After the sneak preview, the title was unfortunately changed from Mutant to Forbidden World and the ad art was changed to the ad art from Galaxy Of Terror. The line that was used during the shooting on the crew t-shirts was: "Where the slime ends
the blood begins."

Did you worked on or knew people who did this movie? Are there any more behind the scenes tidbits you can share? Are there any similar stories or deleted materials for GALAXY OF TERROR? It would be such a cool bonus for GOT and FW fans if they include them as extras for their eventual US dvd release... whenever that will be.

reply

i directed and edited Forbidden World (AKA Mutant). I kept a journal all during the process. I also edited Battle Beyond The Stars and kept a journal during that as well. But I have no stories for Galaxy of Terror.

reply

Directed? Are you Allan Holzman? If you are, then it's a honor to meet someone associated with one of the most bizzare, creative and imaginative Corman movie from that era. For me, it ranks right up there with GALAXY OF TERROR as sheer popcorn exploitative fun. Though, it's one glaring flaw was that the entire movie was way too dark in which you couldn't see much of the set, let alone the barfing alien.

What was the deleted material comprised of? Bloopers? Too much blood or gore? Nudity? I know it had to be trimmed to get a R rating.

A word on BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS... it was a terrific movie... one of the best Roger Corman ever put out, but the editing for the space battles were .. well ... very confusing. You seemily have recycled shots of spaceships heading left and right again and again... even with the characters describing the action.. I and as well as others still couldn't make out what was going on.

Alan, your movie RULEZ. And I am honored that you sent me a message about your film & hope we can exchange some others about it. We all love FORBIDDEN WORLD, and not just for the exploitation content. I like how the film has a sort of reckless need to entertain even if it means making wall details out of compartmentalized lunch containers. It's a unique movie and a restoration of the excised footage would be a VERY hot commodity: As far as anyone knows the movie was meant to be 78 minutes long and fullframe. You'd blow everybody's mind with a 90 minute widescreen restoration, and I'd walk over my own mother to see it theatrically.

There *ARE* two legit retail DVD releases of the 78 minute version available: Anolis of Germany has a nice Region 2 PAL release that has the movie's music soundtrack and the theatrical trailer on the ROM, and a Japanese Region 2 NTSC release that is also very nice but without the bonus dealios: I think it's a bit lighter of a transfer though some prefer the PAL color. Both are in print right now, all you need is a Region 2 player and you are set. With a few minutes of Googling both can be headed to anyone reading this overnight.

I think I speak for everyone also when stating that I can watch this movie anytime and enjoy it, seen it a zillion times and plan on a zillion more before passing along. Thanks for the work, it's a wonderful little space nightmare for grown-ups and I hope to GOD nobody ever remakes it (unless it meanz fat payola for you, of course -- you deserve it after having the film become a staple of cult home video science fiction for the ages :D).

has anyone seen Dead Space? It's another Corman production...but it looks like it completely (and i mean virtually every plot element) rips of Forbidden World. I haven't seen it, but if you check out its trailer on videodetective + one of the reviews for it on imdb, you'll see that it is a re-hash of Forbidden World: Space (ranger, marshall, troubleshooter?)... and his robot sidekick!.. gets a distress call from a research facility. he arrives and finds out they've been genetically engineering a new organism (a metaphor) which escapes, and gradually grows larger as it kills the crew. to kill it he injects it with the cancerous blood of one the scientists! in addition to this, from what i can gather, there is a soft-core sex scene a la Forbidden World, and a scene where the crew searches for the organism outside the station on a desert planet! Seriously, how can this even be legal? I suppose Holzman doesn't own the script to Forbidden World...I've got to imagine that Corman productions keeps a tight hold on stuff like that, so I suppose they could just remake their own movies under different titles...but this is just too much.

The german disc is really good! I bought it a couple years ago.

what year was this movie filmed????

not a bad b flick i have seen worse.

First the director of Xtro posts on imdb, now Mr Holzman! I agree with the guy up thread, this film is one of the all time classics of the post-Alien genre. Brilliant music also, if only they'd released the soundtrack!

I remember seeing Forbidden World many years ago on UK pre-cert video, the cover art for it was great - a planet with a huge bite taken out of it.I looked out for the movie after reading about it in Chas Balun's Horror Holocaust book.

"According to imdb, this is a follow-up/sequel to Galexy of Terror, so now I definitely have to see it"

It's not a sequel, it just happens to recycle some of the same sets and left over F/X. I don't know why everyone insists that this is a sequel.

This film and "Galaxy of Terror" should be released together on a two-sided flipper disc doublebill. That would make for a simply awesome DVD.

Q: What's the biggest room in the world? A: The room for improvement.

reply

It continues to piss me off when other countries are afforded a DVD of an American film while us Americans aren't afforded one. Makes no damn sense. The same case is with "Alligator"; it's a foreign DVD with a running commentary I'd love to listen to.

When is this insane practice going to stop?

Damn right! Multi region DVD players kick ass! Have you seen Blu-Ray multi players?

Good news! Shout Factory announced today (Jan. 14, 2010) that it has obtained the home-entertainment rights to the Roger Corman library and that Forbidden World (among many other titles) will be released sometime in 2010.
