Mimeograph machines were common when I was in high school, and the fresh ink had a strangely compelling odor. We used to smell the paper just as in the film.

Fowler's knots? Did you say ... fowler's knots?
A wax type ink was used in those days that had a strong odor. Some kids loved the smell and got a small high from it.
shareEvery student in the 80s did this when their teachers handed out papers fresh off printer.
Absolutely accurate.
I feel pity for you. You never experienced the musty, sweet odor of damp, freshly mimeographed sheets in school.
Sometimes way back then, if you were a real teacher's pet, you could help the teacher preparing the sheets by turning the drum of the machine. You could practically bathe in the chemical smell.
I'm learning so much from this board tonight--Glenn Frey's contribution to the film, a poster dating the "real" Stacy, and now this! This printer ink is a little before my time. For years now, I assumed the smell was Mr Hand's fault: something bad going on in his case where I thought the papers were kept.
Sorry, Mr. Hand!
Yes. You can believe a real poster here when he tells he dated the “real” so-and-so.
How fucking stupid are you?
This thread is hilarious! Just watched this movie for the first time today and howled at this scene. It brought back memories. When the teacher would had them out fresh and they were still moist, it was the best.
My date last night was awful. And then he wouldn't even spend the night.
