We all know this flick hasn't aged well. time for a reboot with cool, up to date cgi and more popular actors.

ET was played by a differently abled boy & small woman & small man. It was voiced over by a woman. Also, the director is a Holocaust survivor.
So now 30+ years later it's still almost impossible to beat this combo.

We know from the prequel Star Wars series that E.T. is part of the Star Wars universe.
So the sequel should have the Empire discovering and coming to Earth with the intent of subjugating it and making it part of the Empire. The movie should end with a massive CGI-battle for control of our Solar System.
To tie it to the original movie -- for the sake of nostalgia -- one of the Earth pilots should be the son of Elliot from the original.

But wouldn’t the Empire arrive to find us at a primitive stage in evolution since Star Wars took place a long time ago? Doesn’t matter though, our monkey-like ancestors would still take down the stormtroopers with clubs and spears.
