I'm watching the movie right now for like the 50th time and he gets better and better every time I see him in this especially when he thinks his brother and ET are going to die, man he really knocked it out of the park. He's actually my favorite of the 3 siblings.
He really does nail the older brother thing doesn't he? Growing up, my older brother was always the first one to torment me, and also the first one to jump in and help me when I needed it. Michael gives Elliott a lot of grief, but when it comes time to help he's all in. I so recognized that dynamic when I re-watched E.T. a few months ago.
Barrymore was very cute and a scene stealer for sure, and Thomas was great as the everykid Elliot, but MacNaughton--with less to play with than the other two--manages to be every bit their equal. I see that he's recently started acting again. Glad to have you back, sir.
It's funny, Michael reminds me a lot of my older brother when I was growing up, too. He has that warm brotherly quality down to a tee. As a kid I always looked on Michael like he was a kind of hero, he was just cool.
I agree, all three of the kid actors were perfect, and were as convincing a young family as you'll see in cinema. I saw behind the scenes footage on the DVD, and you see the kids all playing with each other and having a blast - that seemed to be the key, that they were actually close to each other, as well as Spielberg's direction who looked like he had such a tremendous rapport with his actors.
I like Dee Wallace as well, she was a great anti-soccer mom, laughing at her kids saying stuff like penis breath. Great actress. The strength of the actors and acting in the film is one of its best aspects when I rewatch it as an adult.
Ain't no goddamn takes, ain't no goddamn motion picture
It's not hard to imagine them getting along off camera. The chemistry was clearly there, and Spielberg strikes me as the sort of guy who would encourage it and a playful environment. Watching that 20 year reunion on the DVD, you can see the actors all have an affinity for him.
Yeah, Dee Wallace--aside from just being flat-out hot as Texas asphalt--really captured that group of baby boomer single moms, like mine, who were a little less formal.
