Why can Elliot and Gertie hear neighbours argue during the scene when they're putting on their make up for Halloween, when their house is standalone (detached)?

I'm watching it now. It was Michael and Mary arguing about his Halloween costume. She didn't want him going out trick-or-treating dressed as a terrorist.
