I think Spielberg has some great stuff, but yes ET is way overrated. It's just not very good.

Seriously how could this movie was such a huge hit? I guess the target audience was 5 year olds.

It was 1982 and this was a ground breaking family oriented feel good film, a great blockbuster. Put yourselves back into those days and try to understand that this was and is a truly fine movie (in spite of the seemingly formulaic bits). Compare it to the awful Avatar film, and you'll have to conceed that this was a spectacular movie for its day. All of the elements, music, acting, special effects without over the top cgi, script, editing, it all came together.
