Over-emotional

Why does the kid get so emotional about an alien he's only known for a week? And then the mother gets all upset too, and she didn't know *beep* about ET. I can get Drew Barrymore getting emo about it - she's a tiny little kid. I just don't buy it.

It's not that I don't like emotional movies, but the emotion has to be earnt.

Empathy.

I like to get loaded and watch Deadwood.

Something the OP is obviously lacking, it's made clear in the movie that these 2 had a special connection, right down to their physical health.

Empathy was yesterday, today you're wasting my mother *beep* time!

How sad to see that some people are struggling to understand the basic emotions of E.T.

The kid was in symbiosis with E.T. The mother was just proud of her son becoming the first human friend of an extraterrestrial. Not to mention all the money they will make in interviews, books and TV shows she was counting in her head..

If you ever watch it again, do us all a favour and actually pay attention to it.

The mom could've been emotional for another reason like maybe because Elliot found a friend like E.T. to help heal him after the divorce.

Most of the audience got teary eyed, and they have only seen the alien for a couple of minutes. You know this movie is for humans?

Obvious troll is trolling!

Of course Ellio was crying. E.T was the only close friend he had, and it was even beyond friendship! They had a special connection.
As fro the mother, she was sad cause her child was sad! Empathy I believe it's called.
