Why does no one ever talk about Keys (the Peter Coyote character)?

I found him particularly interesting. In a role that could have been nothing but a nameless, faceless, heartless, soulless government functionary, Coyote and screenwriter Mathison created a very human character. The scene where he tells Elliot that meeting an extra-terrestrial was something he had been wishing for since he was 10 years old still moves me (moved me far more than the high-pitched histrionics that were taking place in that same scene). One could see that that wide-eyed child was still inside him.

Agreed. Great character who did everything in his power to help save E.T.

It's true. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and just watched it with my six year old daughter (who loved it) before it left Netflix. I was surprised by how sympathetic he was. My memory of him, and his team generally, was badly distorted (maybe I misunderstood at the time, even?). I had previously thought they wanted to slice E.T. up whether he died or not!

He was quite the softie to let Elliott be alone with E.T.; and the supervision of the van was pretty lax as well. I wonder if he got fired! But so then the question becomes: if they didn't get away with the van, what was going to happen next? If he wasn't going to let E.T. go home, I guess he's a little less sympathetic after all? Or maybe he would have wanted to, but his superiors would have overruled him? They did actually catch up to E.T. in the woods--but I suppose with the spaceship right there, they didn't want to risk trying to grab him?
