Both my mother and I swear up and down that we remember Gertie saying this when the film was in theaters in 1982. However, the DVD and online releases don't have this line. They have her saying, "I'm not stupid, ya know", but we distinctly remember the other.
Am I remembering incorrectly, or was it changed at some point?

I just remember the "I'm not stupid" part, but I've been wrong about remembering lines from films before.
The most debated seems to be Michael's terrorist line, in which a lot of people swear it was never said. It was.
"A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference." Eeyore
In the original movie, the mother forbade Michael to go as a terrorist and he argued that all the guys were. In the reissue, they changed it to hippie.

Did you have the E.T. read-along book and record? I did, and THAT is where you probably heard the line, because it was narrated by Drew Barrymore in character as Gertie. It was an unusual read-along because in this case one of the actual film actors was narrating the adaptation and it contained actual snippets of dialogue from the film being adapted. Typically these records were narrated and/or performed by sound-alike voice actors. Since there was a long period of time between E.T.’s theatrical premiere and the home video release, many kids would use these records to remember the movie before they could have the chance to own a video copy.
