It's IMDB, people love to downvote anything popular because they're under the impression that will make them cool for being nonconformist
shareYeah. I bet it's people who thought of themselves "cool" to downvote a film for the whole family.
Like they think they've grown up so the film's not good for them anymore.

It's about right. But I think ultimately this is one of those "Rate it what you want it to be" kind of movies, and no amount of professional critique or IMDB poll is going to alter what anyone feels for this movie.
shareAs one of the most beloved and original films of all-time, 7.9 seems low. Similar classics are in the high 8's or low 9's.
For goodness sakes, "Deadpool" (a good movie, yes) got 8.1 on here! Not trying to knock "Deadpool" and it's a fun and entertaining comic flick but on an artistic level, not anywhere in the same league as E.T. I'm just making an example....not trying to take a shot at the film or its demo.

We all know IMDB ratings are very flawed. Deadpool only came out a year ago or so right? I think it takes at LEAST 5 (probably more like 10) years after a movie comes out before you can have a "somewhat" reliable rating. When a new movie comes out every idiot with a low standard for movies rates it a 8-10, and you can rate movies you havent seen or have even come out yet. Those same idiots vote things like ET a 1 or 2. I don't care if you like the movie or hate it, its better than a 2.
shareIt's better than 2 for sure, but 7.9 seems like a reasonable score to me. I just rewatched ET about a year ago, and while it's a good, solid film, I stop short of calling it a masterpiece.

shareThat sounds reasonable to me - give it an 8 myself. I agree there is some stupid voting by - as far as I can tell - over excitable dolts who love/hate a particular actor or see the film as an attack on something they hold sacred.
But I think most of the time I find my vote is within a point of the rating therefore it must be about OK ☺
