Question about end (spoilers)

Hi. I have a question about the very end, where the daughter is sitting at the foot end of the bed and calls to her mother. The mother has taken medication. Does the mother really see her daughter or is the mother just imagining it since she was on medications?
Another question is did Jennifer do the killings or did Mary?

reply

the intention was to make us think she was on medication.

I assume Mary was the one who put the lizard in grandma's bed, because Jennifer asked her to basically. I also assume Jennifer yanked the chord that fell into the bathtub. Mary was supposedly on her way down the steps when it happened. Unless Mary could get up the steps lightning quick without making any noise, I'd assume Jennifer opened up the window. Then again, Jennifer is a ghost and I'm not sure what the rules are. Are they or are they not capable of physically touching or moving things. Of course, these are all assumptions.

I think that Jennifer pulled the plug and was the one that scared her brother at the window. Of course Mary could have startled him and caused him to fall but he looked really frightened when he screamed. Imagine seeing you're dead sister out of nowhere like that.

Nope, nope, nope. It was all Mary. She might have developed double personality because of depression over guilt by her sister's death, but there was no ghost actually killing people. Everyone died by hands of Mary. You can argue that Jennifer's spirit was possessing her, I can accept that, but it wasn't the spirit alone doing all the killings. The greatest truth are in the scenes where the pizza cutter is being used: who's holding it? Mary. Who attacked Laura when she closed the door? Mary. The pizza cutter even cut the door frame.

At the end(when she is locked up) we are led to believe that she was crazy and took on her sister's personality and killed everyone. However, at the very end of the movie we see that Jennifer was real all along. Jennifer appears at the foot of her mother's bed and the movie ends with her mother screaming. As far as the murders go Jennifer did work through Mary somewhat. It was Mary that put the lizard in her grandmother's bed causing her to have a heart attack and Mary did take the pizza cutter and was going to try and kill her mother. I think though that it was Jennifer(or her spirit) that killed the brother and father. When the kid fell he looked scared to death and I think when the radio was pushed into the water Mary had left the bathroom(or at least the movie made it look like she was not there). However I guess there is no way to tell for sure. I do think however that Jennifer's hauntings were real. Although, this movie is EXTREMELY old and the acting sometimes seems outdated the plot(family tragedy and disturbed children) makes this a good psychological and horror movie. They need to remake this for present standards. If done correctly it would really be a hit.

I'm going with Mary possessed by Jennifer. Jennifer's ghost was real. Just ask her mom. :) They did kind of shy away from having us actually see Mary doing any of the killings. But for being an evil vengeful ghost, Jennifer was no genius. She was going to attack her mom with a pizza cutter?? Was she planning on cutting her into easy to eat slices??

I think that Jennifer appearing to Mary was real(well yeah we know from the end its a fact) but actually when I think about it then perhaps it was not actually Jennifer's ghost but a demon or evil spirit disguised as Jennifer. The house was probably meant to be evil after all and evil spirits prey on those weak and vulnerable.

Exactly what I think. To me, Jennifer was not there at all. She died, her spirit went to some place (heaven, for those who believe) but that house, numbered 13666, was a place where demons lived. I go with this line of thought too: a demon took Jennifer's shape and played mind games with Mary, leading her to do all the killings. Took advantage of her guilt, played with her memories. What Laura sees at the end is a demon disguised as Jennifer. Don't really believe that a loved girl as Jennifer would come back for vengeance. But demons need no excuse, as they are by definition... evil.

I just wish I could remember the title of the book I read years ago that absolutely HAD TO HAVE BEEN INSPIRED FROM THIS MOVIE. Usually its the book first however this was a screenplay and not based off of any book. The book that I read had the exact same incidents. However, there were some subplots. The father was a pervert and supposedly molested Jennifer(so I guess in a way she was treated bad). Also, I think Jennifer in the novel was more of a brat than in the movie. I seemed to remember that while alive Jennifer did bad things(started fires) and blamed them on Mary. And at the end of the novel when Jennifer appears to her mom she is black and burnt looking.

There was another movie - Trilogy Of Terror - I think, and the short version is a little boy had drowned/killed himself because his mom was abusive. Mom did some kind of voodoo spell to bring him back, and he did reappear, but after a short while it was discovered that it wasn't her son, but a demon - and he was pissed.

imo it was all mary. she felt guilty over not helping Jennifer get out of the car and pretty much let her die. the guilt got to her. Jennifer was not a ghost the thing at the end was just one final scare. most likely the meds or the mother just having a nightmare.

When i first saw the film as a teenager, I just felt that Jennifer had been an evil, self centered girl in life probably who really didnt care for anyone other than herself.. but now i see there is a lot of ambiguity and different ways to view this film which makes it good, gives us movie buffs issues to discuss/talk about...

This movie would be great for a remake!!! I could see how it could be so scary. Another interpretation was Mary was not seeing or talking to Jennifer at all but a demon disguised as her and making all the bad things happen. And of course getting Mary to help her. I actually like to think of it that it really was Jennifer coming to Mary and that Jennifer was a horrible little girl in real life before she died.
