Head of the Family Caused It All

That was not a ghost but a fallen spirit masquerading as the deceased sibling. Like all fallen spirits their one goal is to destroy as many humans as they could. The head of the family had a drinking problem which allowed that fallen spirit to take root into that household. That, and having no kind of religion to protect his family from the very real unseen influences.

Some would say that's "just your interpretation" but as a Christian, I concur it is the only one that makes this plot plausible.

Even if ghosts existed or the dead could come back, why would Jennifer want "revenge" ?

And if she did, her main target ought to be the alcoholic father. But why kill them? Just haunt5 them with great remorse.

The killing ways and bad counsel of this ghost -- so willing to victimize and torment those who are truly sorry -- indeed suggests a "fallen spirit" or demon.
