Why did they want to drain kiras essence?

Why did they veto the call to kill Kira on the spot and decide to drain her essence when the harmonic conjunction would renew them 20 minutes later? I suppose kira could have been in that cage and Jen could have been trapped under the rubble in the tunnel for 6 months or whatever, but from the timespan I got from the film, the harmonic conjunction was like 20 minutes or less after capturing Kira. So.. Why didnt they just kill Kira on the spot? Wasnt the harmonic conjunction and the dark crystal going to renew them for 1000 more years? I don't think they knew the mystics were in the castle or else they would have avoided the crystal during the harmonic conjunction, right?

Interesting question. I guess the Skeksis didnt think that far. They just went the way they always did.

The Great Conjunction would make them live forever, but who says it would make them young? Perhaps it was because the General disliked the idea of eternal life without eternal youth, and wanted to meet the joining of the three suns young and rejuvenated and stay that way forever while his fellow Skeksis would stay old and withered forever.

Wow I'm about to sound like a huge dork...

SkekUng (Garthim Master) was vain and thought more about himself than the Great Conjunction. SkekZok (Ritual Master) knew the smart move was to kill Kira on the spot, but since he and his conspirators were in the minority they didn't try to stop him.

"Well...I've seen enough. Come on Charlie, we're going home."

Did the Skeksis scientist say that the rejuvination of Skeksis work better when they drank the essence of Gelflings?
