The Crate question

The crate said arctic expedition, was the thing in the crate supposed to be a yeti?

reply

Yeti, if real, aren't Native to the Arctic. But I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they were going for.

That's the first time I've seen that mentioned or thought about it. But that's actually a perfect explanation for what it is. It's obviously primate, and Yetis are usually referred to as snow covered Sasquatch.

reply

No doubt the smallest Yeti ever seen.

Maybe it was a cub?

A cub? LOL. The date on the crate was marked 1834.

It's been a while since I've seen it but if memory serves it looked more like a baboon !

Yetis look like baboons, at least as much as they look like humans

I was thinking this myself after viewing. Looked like a Yeti to me.

I think the arctic expedition reference is in fact an H.P. Lovecraft reference IE At the mountains of madness. A similar refrerence is made in Jason goes to hell where SPOILER AHEAD:

We see a shot of a crate in the basement of the old Vorhees house and it says something like "Miskatonic arctic expedition, 19 something" or another.
END SPOILER

Thats just my take. I think it would be cool in a prequel story to find out that this creature is some sort of old creature that lives and hibernates seemingly forever, kind of like Pennywise in "IT. "

I never really thought much about the creatures origins, but in my back story, in my mind, its an ancient offspring or something of an old one who was brought back to the university on its way to Miskatonic, and was somehow forgotten.

Yetis live in the Himalayan mountain region around Nepal and Tibet, not the Arctic.

Also of note is that the short story this is based on describes the creature as more wolverine like than ape like. Not sure why they changed it for the movie.

I thought character Charlie said in conversation that it was a " Tasmanian Devil " ?

To my knowledge I thought those creatures existed only in Australia and are not as huge or the same color fur as the unknown creature ( aka Fluffy ) in this film either  .

Perhaps he was just making a joke about it because they really didn't know what it is was to begin with    .

I was wondering who " Julia Carpenter " was her name was stenciled on the creature's crate .
Was it a writer's inside joke perhaps ?  

Also was the date on the crate ( June 19, 1834 ) just chosen at random or is it another inside joke by the writer as well ?

Thanks grazatt for your subject post  .
