Why doesn't the crate beast attack Dexter?

I watched Creepshow recently with a friend and we both wondered about something - during the scene when Charlie is attacked and killed by the crate monster, it comes up from behind him and surprises him. That means it walked by Dexter and ignored him while Dexter was looking at the janitor's bloody shoe. I always thought this scene was very unusual because you expect the monster to be inside the crate - obviously it moved its crate back under the staircase because, like Dex said, that's where it felt safe for so long. So why is the creature outside of his home in that scene and why doesn't the creature ever attack Dex? Even when he's standing there in horror watching the janitor and (later) Charlie being killed, the creature just growls at him.

Because Charlie was younger and more gastronomically juicier, Dex was way past his sell by date and was probably riddled with STD's due to his womanising ways and the creature sensed this.

Seriously though, I think Dex is sort of covered by the wall which he is leaning against and the creature comes directly behind Charlie, probably from somewhere towards the back of the other side of the wall or around a corner?

Fluffy probably didn't attack Professor Stanley in either case, as he had already started 'preparing his meal' if you will, each time it only seems like a 'Feck off Dex... Don't disturb my dinner!' snarl/growl.

Another reason maybe is, each time, the victims were in the closest vicinity to the crate, the first 2 in relation to Dexter – Janitor stupidly throwing his hand in (Even though Dexter was close, the janitor was evidently far too close!) Charlie kneeling right in front of it, Wilma leaning against it, maybe each time the creature felt its territory/home was threatened? So it opened up a big furry can of whoop-ass.

The main reason is jump scare. But if doesn't attack Dexter because it's busy gobbling up people while Dexter escapes.

Right, Wallace. I chalked it up to the other victims being closer. Reminds me of a joke I've heard several comedians tell: When you and your friends are being chased by a dog, you don't have to really be faster than the dog. Just faster than your slowest friend.

bad theory time: the creature in the crate was attracted to Dexter. it attacked the janitor; seeing him as competition. now go watch the Tales from the Darkside episode, 'Inside the Closet.'

I don't think so. I think it was hiding in the shadows where Charlie couldn't see him under the stairs. Once Charlie stepped inside, the creature blocked his path and attacked him. As to not eating Dexter, he is busy with Charlie and Mike (the janitor) eating them, so Dexter has enough time to run away.

I can't remember all the points but some people have developed the theory that dexter and henery are the ones who killed all those people. it's on another thread in this board. Henrys murderous imaginings of billy and dexter's "im at a breaking point" forms a Folie à deux killing spree.

Henry repeatedly has these "boring to you" fantasys of killing his wife; throughout the segment. They are the premise of the theory that it is all a "boring fantasy".

You should probably watch the movie again, or at least just the Crate segment. Charlie is in the opening under the stairs, which is about 5 feet wide. Fluffy is somewhere under the stairs and then he attacks Charlie. He doesn't sneak up on him from behind, but rather the side. Dexter is a good ten feet behind Charlie in the stairwell. May I ask why you think the scene is unusual? It felt safe under the staircase, not just the crate.

Clearly Fluffy didn't want to leave his safe zone which is the crate. He wants to stay close to that same spot where he was for so long. The janitor put his hand inside the crate while Charlie walked right into Fluffy's space. Both times Dexter was far enough away from any danger. I don't think Fluffy would actually walk away from there to eat someone. Plus he had a belly full of two humans...maybe he needed time to digest? lol

The crate beast liked Dexter's haircut so it left him alone. 😀
