Cable had barely been invented - in college we RENTED a VHS machine

VHS machines started at 800-1000 bucks --- and there was a BETA drama thing going on - 2 "standards" - well wiki it

DURING snowstorms - and a bunch of vids to use it with.
Sounds crazy now - seeing this first time - i just figured they'd (who ever THEY are) - would make one of these a year.

Maybe he's referring to Leslie Nielsen having that portable TV on the beach. Just maybe.

VCRs and video cameras for home use had been around for nearly six years when this movie came out. They were far more expensive than they are now and it's obvious, from looking at Richard's (Nielsen's character) house, that he's a wealthy man. Not to mention he was probably heavily into videorecording for both entertainment and security purposes.

Exactly. He seemed like he was a Videophile who would always have the newest technology. In this time frame that meant crt sets with better quality tubes and the vcr. He also owns beach front property, so I doubt he cared much whether one of his toys was destroyed by a wave.

Haha! I remember the whole Beta drama. I was always sad because they only had Child's Play on Beta at the video store and we had VHS. :(

It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?

god- the now beyond irrelevant - BETA actually gave a better pic- using more of the tape for quality -- but VHS won, because you could fit a 2 hr *beep* quality movie on one tape. whatever.

THEN !!!!! eventually - we got 56k internet...

Berners-Lee somewhat famously just sorted out how to make web pages - and talk to each other - the whole issue of SEARCH never occurred to him.
