The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill
I find the skit to be well written and well made. It's also a surprise how Stephen King can act. He's good at playing the poor dumb hick. But I found the skit to be very depressing. Anyone else agree?

shareI agree but I also think its darkly humorous and in some cases outright funny. King's hick is so erratic he sometimes seems just plain goofy.
shareI Think this is the case with most of the movie, Its a dark funny horror. It was intended to be a bit funny.

yeah it very dark, but if you ever get the chance mercury check out the story "weeds" from which this is based, It's give a lil more insight as to what that plant-like substance is and I guarantee you won't look at the jordy verrill story the same way again.

I finally got to read the short story, as I was going crazy with curiosity, but to be honest, imo it didn't really divulge anything that can't be deduced. I mean obviously the weeds are some form of extraterrestrial parasite... the detail the story gives about the weeds having some form of intelligence and telepathic abilities was interesting, but not particularly shocking. The way Stephen King described the torment produced by the weeds was so well described though - it's so much worse than what you just gather from the movie version. Oh, and the bit about how the weeds were pretty much sucking him dry - that was disturbing. I also found it kind of gross that the stuff inside the meteor initially was some white flaky stuff like Quaker Oats. That just sounds so nasty!
shareI also agree,it was well written and King was perfect.I thought the part where Jordy see's that the weeds are growin on his netherregions(Oh No Not There),that part always got me,I guess being a man I could relate. The ending was quite dismal but required(when he's there with the gun and say's something like"Please God let me get it right this time")Very dark and effective!Easily my favorite of all the viginettes.(Hope I spelled that right)It maintained a very dark mood all the way through it.And the title of it was perfect,It was definately a lonesome death!!!! I've always enjoyed that segment, and I do think King's performance is pitch-perfect (though not as a 'dumb hick,' rather as Romero told him 'think Wile E. Coyote'). He, and Romero, and Savini, all dislike his performance and think it's too much (according to the latter pair's commentary); I think most fans disagree, as it ends up funny as hell.
Though I don't find the ending depressing, it is pretty bleak. But then, Jordy's life was already pretty bleak ($200 to pay of his bank loan is his highest aspiration? yike). Turning into a plant shouldn't happen to a dog, but poor ole Jordy's probably better off out of this world after all.

Yes, this is the one story I always overlooked as a kid, because it wasn't as in-your-face as zombie Grantham or zillions of cockroaches... but now I feel it's the best story, so well acted, and haunting and disturbing. The way his voice sounds at the very end... ugh!!
shareI also think this is my favorite story. This and Something to Tide You Over.
King's over the top the performance is funny as hell. At first you're like "Huh?" But you quickly warm up to him. What makes the ending so devastating is that Jordy is the only completely sympathetic character in the movie. He didn't murder his father, or cheat on his wife, he's not a broken down wimp due to an over bearing wife or a racist, OCD crackpot. He's just a simple minded country guy that didn't understand what was happening to him.
The ending to the story has always depressed me for these reasons. Its not the scariest or most brutal story in the movie. But it is the most emotionally effective.
Yeah, Stephen King was pretty good with the role. It was probably made for him to begin with. I think the idea was that he shouldn't have touched the meteor and should've gone to the authorities about it because it would've helped him out in the long run.
shareI felt sad for poor old Jordy, but I also felt sad for the whole world considering it seems like the weed keeps growing and growing till it consumes everything
back in 98 I did a titty comedy for Skinemax. Sex Camp, ya remember it?
Hahaha...I laughed so much when I saw him in his final scene when he was a weed man. Then after he blew his head off, I thought there'd be blood...but nope, just poof and tons of grass hahahaha.
shareThe funny thing was that was not King under there. It was someone else playing it. I don't know why.
shareWhat I found to be depressing/creepy are the television programs of that televangelist ("prerecorded" lol) and the movie with the old woman droning on about dreamers and doers, the movie soundtrack playing while Jordy goes outside to see the weeds taking over - just seemed like a downer.
