I've wondered for years...

How did they film the drownings in Something To Tide You Over? I've always found Tom Savini's techniques very interesting and was wondering if he's ever discussed how they filmed Ted Danson and Gaylen Ross with the water hitting them? Also, when Ted Danson's head is completely under the water... always wondered how they did that!

They actually drowned Danson for real. He was replaced by an android Danson, that was nicknamed 'Dandroid', by the cast and crew.

Dandroid acted in Danson's place in every subsequent performance.

hahahaha I guess that explains it.

No doubt they really did film Danson under water, just under safe conditions.

The water hitting them was done by some sort of wave making machine. I don't know the technicalities behind it but apparently it simply simulates waves. They were sitting in holes dug in the sand with their heads sticking out of a hole in plywood that was laid across the top of the hole so they weren't actually buried. The tiny space left between their necks and the plywood hole was sealed and the wood was covered in sand.

As far as the Ted Danson underwater shot goes, his head was in a water filled tank that could be drained almost instantly with a powerful vacuum but before it was filled, the procedure played out sort of like this....an oxygen hose would be inserted in his mouth, tank was filled with water, cameras rolled, hose was removed from mouth, scene was filmed for about 15 seconds, tank was drained immediately.

I heard someone stood by with a baseball bat as well in case of an emergency. If something went wrong with the vacuum they could just smash the glass with the bat. I read about this in Tom Savini's book Grande Illusions.
