I think its pretty funny too have the bad kids dressed up as punks. When I was in High School (90s) the punks were actually smart and well-behaved. I dont know how they acted in the 80's. Does anyone here who was in high school in the early 80's remember the punks killing people or terrorizing the neighborhood?
I suspect that you just knew some sad conformists that wanted to seem cool by liking what they though was punk music, but what was in all probability little different than Britney Spears.
By the time the 90's rolled around the true punk sub-culture was almost gone (at leat in the public eye). We didnt terrorize or kill people. We didnt start fights, although we would gladly finish one. We were the smartest people, as it was a combination of street smarts and academic smarts. There was absolutely no peer pressure between us. Punk was more than just a rebel style, or a trend (we hated trendies - posers), it was a life style, an attitude, something that lives within us real punks to this day. We have jobs. We have families. But we still hate being told what to do , because society says so. We make up our own minds for urselves what is right and wrong. We live on the edge, the fine line between success and mental destruction. The music was a way to let off our stress, anquish and political views. Back then real punks knoew everything about politics and what was going on. We were very opinionated. Some of us may have different opinions than our best friends, but that was ok... no peer pressure... no judgementalism.
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Reality
For some other good movies about the 80's punks and attitudes see: Repo Man (1984) Suburbia (1984) SLC Punk! (1999) Liquid Sky (1982)
back in the late 70s/early 80s,punks were very different from the punks of today.punks tended to be more violent, nihilistic and even rightwing.i didnt know of any punks where i lived, that killed people, but terrorizing neighborhoods??yes.terrorizing the local scene??absolutely.i heard of other cities that had it worst.i know that in california in the 80s,their were a lot of really viscous, violent punk gangs like LADS,fight for freedom, suicidals etc, etc, who were kicking the crap out of people, pulling guns on each other, doing robberies, dealing dope, beating up gays, etc, etc.those were differnt times
A lot of the punks I ran with eventually ended up either a skin or straightedge at some point. Mosh pits werent always nice places to be although some people came to the show to just dance. Most of the time you went in to kick ass or have yours kicked much to the chagrin of 'Fugazi' who were out to make a nicer scene I guess. Anyone remember the ultimate thumbs up to a good band? Hock a luggi on them while they play. There was a lot of hate feeding there but mostly it was hanging with people who didnt fit the establishments mold for us. Yeah I remember bum bashing.
Not all punks were smart. I can think of a handful of friends who went to see 'Agnostic Front' or Armory Shows with me who latter on went to prison for 'doing crimes'. Not smart in my book. Overall though we discussed a lot of things before we bought into them. We challenged a lot as well because we wanted the answers and were pretty much not convinced when got them anyway. Maybe some of us are content today but I doubt it still.
That was all before the sellout of 'Alternative' bands and the days when jocks suddenly were wearing Docs to school and wearing 'The Cure' T-shirts. Thanks Nirvana! Thank you Dave Kendall and 120 Minutes! Posers!
I was only 10 years old in 1984....but even at that age I remember seeing groups of punkers roaming the streets at night walking probably 15 to 20 down the street in front of my house....a girl who I used to hang out with in the 4th grade had an older sister that was rocking blue Liberty spikes, leather jackets(the way I remember them looking was like Bill Paxton's character in The Terminator) and forgetting her cloves so we would smoke 'em...haha....there were nice houses along the river that had these little drainage ditches with tons of drunken graffiti sprayed everywhere....that's first time I remember seeing band names like Christian Death and Crass.....broken beer bottles, torn out bricks and other damage I remember seeing.....looked like fun.....well.. fast forward about 20 years and I am now right where they were..having fun and not taking orders from anybody..and I have quite a few friends I drink beer with that are around 20 years older than me......so with that.....to all of you older people that were there and experienced it first hand.....cheers...and I'll drink my piss warm Colt 45 in your honor.
