shareAre you seriously asking this question?
shareIt was in no way an homage to George Orwell's book and film, absolutely nothing like it. If anything it was a contrasting view of how the future could look, but as it was filmed so closely to the actual date it was supposed to invite a 'scarier' reaction to this version. I can imagine conservative parents and politicians back then going crazy in apoplectic angst, Mary Whitehouse's false teeth dropping out as she gasps.
I thought it was absolutely hysterical and hope it stands the test of time. I'd love future media archaeologists to find it and make a documentary on how - in 1984 - the fabric of society was tearing itself apart.

We all go a little mad sometimes.
Obviously it wasn't meant as a direct reference to the story and plot of the book, but don't be a moron. In the early 80s, EVERYONE was talking about how it was going to be 1984 soon, in reference to Orwell's book. Because of that novel, the year 1984 carried dark and bleak connotations of societal collapse and whatnot.
shareI thought it was just that they were the class of 1984 - i.e. they were supposed to be sophomores in high school.
shareThey were the class of 84 meaning that's when they were supposed to graduate.
