Why 1984?

I don't know if this seems like a really strange thing to comment on, but I have to ask, what was the point of having the film set in (what was at the time) two years in the future? If you only changed the name of the movie to something like "Gangland High" you probably would never guess this was supposed to be set in any time other than when the film was released: 1982. So, why is it Class Of 1984 instead of '82?

reply

Because it was trying to cash on the popularity of Orwell's book.
The book has nothing to do with the movie but it partly deals with similar topics.

I don't think the movie was supposed to be *set* in 1984. Rather, they were the class of 1984, meaning they were to graduate in 1984. Meaning, they were most likely in their Junior year of school at the time.

It was set in the present, a commentary on how children had been allowed to get away with anything because they are delicate flowers that shouldn't be disciplined.

The reemergence of Orwells book would have been building up a decent head of steam in 1982, this was a marketing thing. Smart I think.
