Yah, it's a good movie with a mesmerizing erotic atmosphere and surrealistic sequences.
As the OP and others mentioned before, it's not a remake.
While it has the same fitting title like the 1942 movie, it's another story.

Irena (Nastassja Kinski) on her night trip through the wilderness, discovering and exploring her true nature was fascinating. Of course with the inevitable snake. 🐍 ☺
The ending works well, but is frustrating and I didn't see real love there.
In a longer review it was nicely described:
"Oliver plays the power play of masculinity. He is, in fact, the creator and maintainer of rules, as zoologist and zoo manager. He 'knows' the boundaries 'animals' should be kept within, marks them, and maintains them. More than the result of animalistically induced attraction, his obsession with Irena is characterized by an abusive dominance pattern. He gets upset when she is not compliant and, frankly, he seems pretty pleased when she is eventually locked up under his control and he can pet her at his will."
