Wow, good responses, everyone. Something to think about. Yes, athletes DO retire young, but take into consideration that most of them have been doing that since childhood/teenage years.
My timeline of Deckard is possibly: 18-19 years old, becomes a cop or rookie, maybe a cop for 10 years, say until 30. Then a Blade Runner for 5-6 years? In the military you can retire at 37-38, after 20 years. So like one guy said. he is "retired" from the Blade Runner job, not from anything else.
But another weird question; why would Tyrell Corp create him and let him simply live on his own, in his own apartment, as a human? They freak when a Nexus 6 is let loose, even though they die after a few years, and even put a hit on Rachel when she ran, but why let Deckard run loose? Is he being supervised, which is how they found him at the beginning? Locator chip installed somewhere? They found him in the beginning, and al the end on the roof.
Last question; I take it Rachel and Deckard don't have the same abilities of the Nexus 6? Deckard seemed pretty easy to beat at the end, breaking his fingers, while Roy was pushing nails through his palm.
In response to the idea that Rachel and Deckard were cloned from humans, I don't agree. Why would Tyrell make a Replicant clone of his niece, even giving her memories from the niece? The memories are from real humans, but the bodies are probably just miscellaneous/random, like real humans.
Also, this might be a small plot hole: If Rachel has memories from Tyrell's niece, then wouldn't Rachel "know" that Tyrell is her uncle? I'm sure the real human niece has to have some memory of Tyrell, especially since he is the owner of such a large company. Like Steve Job's niece, or Bill Gate's nephew...even if you never met them, you would be "aware" that you are related.
Loved this film, since I was a kid, and can say it literally changed/altered my life since it came out.
