Why do detectives and spies wear 'trenchcoats'?

Do they place tiny unicorns within the inner pockets instead of golden lockets or eyeballs for replicant sockets?

I think it's just atmosphere (in both meanings of the word).

Impossible is illogical.

Trench coats were first made in Britain and worn by British military personnel in WWI. In fact, only officers could wear them. They were incredibly practical with a waterproof fabric and lots of pockets. I think they would be a perfect coat for a detective to keep necessary items, make a weapon less obvious, he could turn up the collar to avoid recognition, etc. Plus they just plain look cool.

Reaction time is a factor in this, so please pay attention.

If they're good enough for Humphrey Bogart, they're good enough for everyone....

Bogart in film noir movies is a good example.

The idea is that in film noir detective films, the scenes are often shot at night, sometimes in fog or rain.
A trench coat in that kind of weather makes sense and it's why film noir characters often wear them.

In later color neo noir movies like "Blade Runner" which was shot at night and in 'rain', bringing back the trench coat made sense and helps to add to the noir atmosphere.

Imo at least, BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

Deep pockets, deep enough to envelop a bottle of cheap blended Scotch.

That's just what men wore in the early 1900s, and this movie is a throwback to older detective movies that glamorized the trenchcoat look.
