GREAT movie (if you just watch the musical numbers)

just watched in HD on the DVR... just music... 30-40 min... great movie

the music in this is awesome... the direction and dancing are great... it's just when they stop singing it gets pretty dull... some good perfs but dvr it... just do the music and zip through the in between and you will love it

there's also lots of songs in the beginning but then it just stops until the last act where it picks up again with durning's academy award nominated performance and song... then the big whitney dolly thing and hard candy... then the wrap up... but before that... it's like 40 min of sappy soap opera and lameness

this thing is perfect for a remake

music scenes i'd give an 8 or 9

I agree. I saw this when it first came out and liked it, but recently re-watched it and thought it was the talkiest movie musical I'd ever seen. There had to be more songs in the stage production, right? Perhaps they had to cut a lot of songs because Bert Reynolds wasn't a singer.
