Update from New Direction

I was rewatching Best Little Whorehouse last night and LMAO when it hit me that with all the remakes they are redoing lately, why hasn't anyone thought to do this one? Now I realize it is supposedly based on a true event so some might be offended if the characters changed a bit but how about this for a new cast?:

Mona Stangley... Queen Latifah
Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd... Will Smith
Jewel... Frances Sternhagen

Now I think Cedric the Entertainer would be great in it but he would be so good as either Melvin Thorpe or the Governor that I am undecided on which would be better. I'd be tempted to bring back Burt Reynolds as whichever part that Cedric didn't take as I think he would be good in either role, too, though I think he would prefer the Governor just so he could do the hat thing. Will Ferrell as a W type Governor might work just as well.

Deputy Fred... Possibly Chris Klein?

The music could be easily updated with some jazzy, some R&B, some blues, some pop, some hip hop feelings to many of them. Mainly I would love to see Will Smith and Queen Latifah work together again in some type of musical because of their duel talents that I would take them in anything. This just seems like something that they could have fun with and majorly camp up.

Don't. The original is just fine.

I usually hate remakes but your cast picks sound like fun! Nice job! It's a way better lineup than what Hollywood would probably come up with: Mona: Jessica Simpson; and Sheriff Dodd: Johnny Knoxville.

Is there ANY message board on this site that doesn't try to remake a classic? Christ Almighty, let it go...the original is JUST FINE, thank you very much.

Well yes apparently ANY movie can be remade no matter HOW old it is....(I just read something about a remake of "Revenge of the Nerds" if you can believe that!!)...anyhoo...the movie version of this did NOT do the ORIGINAL Stage version justice....it was played as just a vehicle for Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds to work together.

I just performed in a stage version of the play and it is MUCH more character driven, and you learn more about the girls in the whorehouse (As well as the relationship between Mona and Ed Earl, and it's not quite as simple as "Sneaking Around")....If you came to see the Ann Arbor (MICH.) Civic Theatre's production of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", I hope you enjoyed it and were surprised at the difference between the movie and stage versions. And just for that reason alone I think they should do a more faithful version of this...(or at least they should RECORD actual stage performances for people who want to see all versions :P But that probably would never happen....lol

Anyhoo, just my opinion! lol

^^ Understood - everyone IS entitled to an opinion, I'm just tired of everyone trying to get Hollywood to remake what was just fine to begin with. I thought this movie was terrific.

My God, people.......can anyone EVER do better than big ol' Charles Durling singing and dancing his song??????? He's doin'g his thing with such sheer delight, I'm still impressed that he does this better than the younger and more slim cast members. Kudos, Mr Durling

As much as i love the film. I would not mind a remake using all the missing songs and subplots from the show.

That cast would be fine if the title of the movie were The Best Little Crack House in the Hood!!
